General Policing Discussions

Hi, I've just passed my PERT Test (Yay!) and I now have an interview coming up. I'm extremely nervous about it as I've only had one interview experience. I started my current employment a week after I finished school. I've been there 3 years now and haven't applied for a new job until now. I was just hoping someone could explain to me what it's like and what the best thing to do to prepare for it. I would be extremely grateful if I could get some hints and tips! I'm hopefully joining Norfolk Constabulary as a Special Constable. Thank you in advance!

Worth starting a thread on the Conference so we can discuss it. The main Conference starts tomorrow, and today is 'Women’s Eve of Conference' day. From what I can gather so far, Winsor and Neyroud are really getting a hammering about inequality of pay in the police force and alleged sexism in thier reports.

I have read the phrase numerous times but can't quite get a handle on it... What is a WALT? Any examples? They seem to be quite an irritation to some users.

is there a glossary or somewhere we could have one? its pretty tiresome having to explain all the terms of our often used jargon.... DP, Walt, MoP etc etc

With Cheshire we gain a degree in Neighbourhood Policing. All our training is linked through Warrington University. It takes 2 years to complete and we have essays to write on certain topics throughout the 2 years. Just wondering if all forces do the same.

Just wondered if anyone has or knows of anyone who has looked into or gone ahead with moving abroad and Policing overseas? I'm looking at either Canada or the US and have read a few bits and pieces from ex-Pat forums, but would like to get opinions from people with regard to the Policing side of things as well as the practicalities of getting citizenship etc abroad. I'm fast becoming sick of the way we are treated here and am longing to do the job I enjoy the way it should be done, and from everything i've read thus far that is a more realistic prospect abroad. Hi Everyone, I'm new to this site and a relatively new Special Constable. I just wondered if colleagues were experiencing the same bizarre, public perception of the police as I have recently? As a civilian, I work in the NHS and frequently have to liaise with social services & other agencies. Recently, I have found that I have been regarded as one of Hitler's henchmen or, at the very least, an out and out fascist when colleagues & co-workers have discovered that I'm a Special. Is this solely down to the media?? I'd be interested to know which number these colleagues & co-workers would ring first if one of their kids went missing or their home had been burgle…

Apparently quite a few people complain that police cars, when driving normally, drive too close behind to the car infront which apparently intimidates the driver infront and quite a few people complain about police cars not indicating when required at roundabouts, etc. Can the officer get some kind of warning for this???? Also if you are behind a car then the driver infront wont go a mile over 30mph if its a 30mph limit. Do some officers really give a ticket to the driver infront if they do go over a mile or two above the limit??

I got told where i was going to be based when i was first assigned to my npt that the specials there had a bad rep with the specials, but recently through hard work the rep has increased by hard work of specials that have been at the station before me. any advice on how to help these guys out or run to such a high standard as themselves? recently i have managed to do 68 hours in 8 days of service and have accomplished 2 arrests. is there anything i should watch that hacks regs off or how to help improve rep?

Two questions. If you're an off-duty police officer and you witness a crime etc, would you call 999 just like everybody else or is there a different procedure? and secondly.. If you know of crime occuring for e.g. drugs abuse, firearms abuse etc, how would you go about to provide intel and to who would it be?

Hi while taxis are doing an important job, especially at the weekends, alot of them have defects and many exceed the speed limit too. Many don't wear seatbelts even when they have no passengers. Are many forces lenuent with these issues or do they issue fines and tickets?? Would welcome to hear from officers who have seen these situations and how they dealt with them.

I'd be interested to hear how other people would have handled this situation, since I feel it was a shambles.... I've been a special for three years, but every now and then something will leave you not knowing what to do, and sometimes it's the silliest thing..... Last night I was on with a part time female officer, who had just been transferred and was brand new to our area, so relied on me for directions etc. and generally didn't know anybody on the shift group. We were the only resource free, so we sat outside the local nightclub, and (as you do) were generally chatting away. I can't seem to find the answer to this and no one has told us as of yet how it works. What I wanted to know is what is the method that GMP (any force really) pay you back for Travel, Food etc... when you put it on your Duty Sheet? Also how long does it take? Thank you in advance!
