I spoke to a police help line some time ago and they explained that covertly recording a conversation with a hidden dictaphone is legal as long as one of the people in the conversation agrees, and that person can be the one making the recording. In other words it's OK for me to covertly record any conversation that I am taking part in. Does that also apply to making covert video recordings? Just wanted to ask the forum a question on law. I have seen a watch online, on a popular classifieds website. The watch is a Tag, No box, No receipt. Dodgy guy answering the phone, but has a decent price. The watch has no strap. Lets say, I can confirm the watch is genuine. What is the law when it comes to stolen goods, I'm not saying this watch is stolen, but I have absolutely no idea. Is there a police websites you can check if items are stolen through serial numbers. Would I be committing the crime of 'handling stolen goods' if it turns out its stolen, and what are the legally required 'prudent' checks.

Can anyone tell me the correct law about being photographed by police without your consent? I looked at PACE and am wondering about the legality of photographing someone who has not been detained, arrested or given any FPN etc. It seems clear cut in s.64A, but am I missing something else?

Hello everyone, My name is michael and I am a huge supporter of the police and what they do to protect us, however of late I have been very concerned about the section 1 of the pace act where police think they can sorce free people to give personal details out at will, it is my understanding we only have to do this if under suspicion of theft or drug carrying, can you confirm your thoughts, and sorry if this in the wrong forum. Hopefully someone may be able to offer some advice. I am a prison officer and a visitor alleged i assaulted her during work, the powers that be are investigating it, however the individual has stated she doesnt wish the police to investigate, and just work. However can they even consider investigating an assault, if the police or CPS have not been involved to determine if it was assault? Not particularly clear i appreciate but its slightly complicated. Hope some one can help as its all very concerning.

If a person is arrested for a serious offence, charged, and subsequently refused bail, under what power can that person be refused permission to make contact eg phone call to family or visits in prison? Also how long can this be enforced for? I understand the reasons, ie to prevent destruction of evidence and such like, just wondering where the power comes from and how long it can be enforced.
