What rights do store security have in regards to stopping customers who they believe to have stolen from the store. The reason I ask is that I was in an Asda last Friday and a store security guard was physically dragging a lady bag into the store and trying to getting her into the admin area. He had dragged her bag in from outside the store and dragging her along the length of the till area trying to get her to the 'staff only' door. She was shouting " she hadnt stole anything and to get his hands off her" and resisting him by pulling towards the exit. Was the security guards behaviour correct or did he over step his powers? I was issued with a PND 80 for criminal damage 3 years ago. During my interview, I remember the police sergeant saying something about the PND not being recorded on the PNC, but held locally. He said that would be for three years or five years -- I can't remember which. I am now thinking of applying for a career which involves working with children and so requires enhanced CRB clearance . Am I correct in thinking, that if I suspect a person who I know to be under the age of 18 has cigarettes about his person, (ie I see him smoking) that I, as a constable, do not have the power to search that individual, but a PCSO can???

Hi, I am sure there are loads of questions on photographs of people, ok so i know its not against the law to take photos of people (even without their consent) in a public place ect, obviously a strange guy at the zoo on his own taking photos of just children (no animals) is gonna cause a bit of alarm/distress... i get that the staff can ask him to leave but if it was a public place and someone complained to police, what could they do? can they issue a pnd for public order? (as they have caused alarm/harassment/distress) or is this one of those situations where you are damned if you do and damned if you dont? Thanks for any input

Evening all, a little advice please. Would it be legal to carry a small hand axe or Bill-hook for use clearing lane/byway obstructions in the motor, and if it is are there any restrictions on it's storage like being kept in a locked box or cupboard when not in use so it's not easily accessable ? Anyone know why we don't do a straight charge for someone who fails to provide at the roadside?? Why do we offer them a second chance back at the Police Station to provide two specimens of breath...(at which point they subsequently either give on or continue to decline to provide). Is it just force policy that we offer a second chance.. Cheers

Following on from another thread here, I am querying the difference between arrest and detain. If I have it right, in some areas a PCSO can 'detain' a suspect for some time or other, but cannot arrest unless the 'any person' powers are used. My query is, how can detaining a person to answer for a crime not be an arrest?
