Greater Manchester Police 'stretched beyond capacity' The chair of Greater Manchester Police Federation has said force officers are "working well beyond maintainable limits". In a letter to Chief Constable Peter Fahy, Chairman Elect Ian Hanson said response teams were "stretched well beyond capacity". Mr Hanson was responding to Mr Fahy's comments over concerns raised by an anonymous officer. The officer said Mr Fahy was "out of touch" over proposed cuts to the force. Greater Manchester Police is undergoing a phased shedding of 3,000 posts, which will see it lose 23% of its workforce by 2015 to help save £134m after its annual budget was cut. Mr Hanson said that …

A FORMER motorway cop is to appear in court, accused of indecently assaulting a young girl. Simon Westwood, an ex-traffic inspector with West Midlands Police, is due to attend a hearing at Solihull Magistrates Court on January 30. The married veteran officer, 55, is charged with one count of indecent assault of a girl aged under 14, under the Sexual Offences Act 1956. He first appeared in court in connection with the case on December 5, at Solihull Magistrates. Mr Westwood made headlines last May after he spoke out about hi…

Source: BBC NewsIf this move were to take place, would it not make things more inefficient?!? The UK government and police forces are trying to reduce costs and I believe that fewer forces with fewer administrative and other cost overheads (such as technology, information sharing, etc) is the way forward... I can't see this happening.

London's mayor is now responsible for the Metropolitan Police's priorities and performance, as part of government plans for elected commissioners. The Metropolitan Police Authority was disbanded at midnight and replaced by the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPC). MOPC will be monitored by the London Assembly's Police and Crime Panel. Operational matters will still be the responsibility of the Metropolitan Police commissioner. The mayor will also set the annual force budget for the Metropolitan Police in consultation with the commissioner. But the mayor does not have the power to appoint or dismiss the commissioner, or the deputy commissioner. Mayor Boris Jo…
