A move to recruit hundreds of extra London police officers has been criticised as panic-stricken after scores of trainees failed security vetting, health checks and classroom exams. More than 400 Police Community Support Officers were selected for training to become fully-fledged officers in February. It was part of moves to meet Boris Johnson’s target of deploying 32,000 police on the capital’s streets. But about 60 were kicked off a month later for what Scotland Yard called “a number of reasons relating to national recruitment standards”, though 22 were reinstated after a review by Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey. Another 20 pulled out before the course began.…

Rank-and-file police officers are to stage a protest over proposed changes to their pay and conditions. The Police Federation said it was planning to hold an event in central London on 10 May. It would not confirm what its plans involve. It comes as the federation's 135,000 members across England and Wales are being balloted on whether they want the right to strike. Along with the armed forces and prison officers, the police are banned in law from taking industrial action. Many officers are angry with the government in the wake of 20% budget cuts and proposals for the most wide-ranging reform of police pay and conditions in more than 30 years. The national federation …

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/9149926/The-Governments-attitude-to-the-police-is-criminal.html Crime is going up, so we should reduce the number of police and undermine their morale. Such is the apparent direction of Government policy. Police spending is being cut by 20 per cent; the number of police officers has already plummeted. In the 12 months to the end of September 2011, the number of officers fell by 6,144 to 138,871, the lowest since 2002. Some good feedback from the Media at last. :)

Police in Nottinghamshire have said they will be discussing compensation for a car window smashed after officers tried to "save" a toy, stuffed dog. Officers received a call from a concerned passer-by who reported seeing a dog left on the back seat of car parked on Church Lane in Mansfield. The police officers smashed a window in the Mercedes and discovered it was, in fact, a toy dog. The toy's owner, Gordon Williams, 80, said police had done the right thing. "I know Little Willy is quite realistic and if they weren't sure about it, they did a good thing as we don't want any more dogs dying in the heat of a car," said Mr Williams. He said it cost £180 to repair the d…
