Councillors in Swindon have voted to stop funding the town's speed cameras. Wiltshire Police say they may rely on mobile cameras to enforce limits The Wiltshire town's borough council is believed to be the first in England to withdraw funding for fixed cameras. The revenue from camera fines goes to the government which allocates cash to councils for road safety on the basis of accident statistics. Councillors said new measures were needed as road deaths and injuries had begun to rise, but police said the cameras had helped to cut accidents. The nine-member council cabinet voted unanimously in favour of withdrawing from the Wiltshire and Swindon Safety Camera Partne…

Just realised I've been religiously posting this every year but managed to completely miss last year's figures... oops... However these are very soon to be superseded by the 2012 figures which should be out in the near future. So these are the police service strength figures for the year ended 31st March 2011... note these are for England & Wales only (Scotland is reported separately)... Specials - 18,421 - that's 18% up on the previous year Regulars - 139,110 - a decrease of over 4,000 officers from 2010 BTP aren't included in these figures, they have an additional 2,631 police officers PCSOs - 15,820 You can download the full document direct from the Home Off…

A man has been jailed after he telephoned Lincolnshire Police to say he was pleased one of their officers had been shot. Louis Woodward, 22, told a control room call taker: "I hope a lot more people go around doing this sort of thing." He made the call on 31 January after Barry Horspool, 61, shot an officer in the face in Sutton St James. Woodward has been sentenced to six weeks in prison after pleading guilty to making an offensive phone call. In the phone call he also said: "I just want to let you know how pleased I am." He added: "What goes around comes around." Frequent calls Woodward, who made the call from West Road in Bourne, gave his name and address during…

During my time with Trading Standards, I was quite involved in trying to deal with the sale of illicit tobacco, both counterfeit and duty evaded. I would be very interested in board members experiences, or indeed, lack of experiences, in this subject. Rather than be thought as ambushing any posters, I'll give a synopsis of my knowledge and experience on the subject.None of what I post hasn't already been publicly aired in newspapers of other media previously, so no state secrets here. About 3-4 years ago, it was discovered that there was a problem with shops supplying illicit tobacco in Derby city. Trading Standards began making visits, and in the early days, seized subs…

I take it any answers given from the suspect during this incident, would now be inadmissible? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2118295/Viscountess-banned-road-year-convicted-drink-driving-day-Royal-Wedding.html Posh lass gets caught drink driving, gets found guilty, doesn't like it. Bitches to anybody that will listen.........namely the DM. There is a point of law that is stated as fact in the report, and not countered. In fact, her counsel, Miss Hodson, stated it in court...... She is saying that the procedure is 'flawed' because........ "In lengthy legal argument, Miss Hodson claimed the case should be thrown out because PC Ceri Jenkins had ‘required’ the viscountess to give a blood sample, rather than offering the alternative of giving a urine samp…

Police use night vision goggles to combat crime in Swindon Night vision goggles are to be used by police in an area of Swindon blighted by thefts from allotments. The measure has been brought in after negotiations with the parish council in Stratton and the local community beat manager, PC Frank Key. The council agreed to fund the goggles for the neighbourhood policing team after complaints about security at several allotments in the area. PC Key said the goggles would act as a deterrent during night patrols. He said: "If local criminals know we've got this extra vision capability at night, they will think twice about committing crime." PC Key said there had been a …
