Children get see petrol bomb explode as part of Sussex Police open day Dozens of children have gone behind the scenes at Sussex Police's Kingstanding training site. The 11 to 16-year-olds are touring the underground nuclear bunker, using kit to investigate a car crash, deploying search dogs, forensically examining a crime scene and finding out what it takes to be a police officer. They are also taking part in a public order demonstration showing how officers deal with petrol bombs being thrown at them. The Be the Police for a Day event is part of Sussex Police People: 10 days live, a series of activities and open days across Sussex until 3 August for the public to get …

The public will be consulted on changing how police in England and Wales use stop-and-search powers, the home secretary has announced.About a million stops take place each year - but only 9% lead to an arrest, Theresa May told MPs. She said it was time to "get stop and search right", as she launched a six-week public consultation. Police must not waste time carrying out unnecessary stops and logging details, Mrs May added. 'Pointless stops' Mrs May stressed the importance of stop and search and said that police would maintain the right to use it. But there is widespread public concern about the way the power has been used, with disparities in search-to-arrest ratios acros…

It's after 1pm, and Danny – a young man with a history of theft and shoplifting – is not best pleased to be roused with a knock on the door by the police. No, he says, he wasn't up late last night and, no, he hasn't been in trouble. "I'm always being hassled by you lot," he tells Sergeant Dave Venus-Coppard before the officer takes his leave from the untidy hostel room. Danny lives in one of the less salubrious areas of Chatham, Kent. Many of the houses in his road are owned by a charity that rehouses the troubled, the alcoholics and the drug users when they are moved on by other councils. Danny's road had appeared at the centre of a small box on Sgt Venus-Coppard's co…

The Scottish police force has apologised for a tweet sent during a Newsnight debate about abusive messages on Twitter. The tweet mocked columnist Toby Young's contribution to the programme. It was later deleted. Police Scotland said the matter was being investigated and Twitter access was being reviewed. Mr Young said he had blocked the force's account, was not offended and would not complain. The journalist was appearing in a discussion with Labour MP Stella Creasy. Ms Creasy, who has received threats of rape on Twitter, wants social networks to do more to protect users and to identify perpetrators. This debate over internet abuse - known as "trolling" - began when…

A string of scandals and budget cuts have left police morale and public confidence at an "all time low", says the Police Minister. Police morale has been significantly undermined not just by cuts but by scandals such as the alleged smear campaign of Stephen Lawrence's family and the Hillsborough cover-up, the Police Minister has suggested. Damien Green said recent allegations involving the improper behaviour of the police have had a "really serious drag" on serving officers as well as harming public confidence in them. In an exclusive interview with Sky News, the minister said that despite complaints by the Police Federation that cuts are harming frontline officers, cr…

Daily Fail I'm afraid: A driver sentenced to a three-year ban after speeding at 165mph told a court: ‘I’m still going to drive – catch me if you can.’ Shiad Mahmoon, 24, was hurtling down a motorway in a high-performance rented Audi R8 Spyder when he was caught. A police helicopter spotted the car racing down the middle lane at 5am and followed it as it veered off at a junction and on to another motorway. Officers filmed the car from above and worked out Mahmoon was travelling at an average speed of between 144mph and 165mph – though police believe he could have been travelling faster at one point. A patrol car was radioed and a chase culminated with Mahmoon pu…

A policewoman with the Hampshire force who disclosed intelligence to criminals has been jailed for three years. Rebecca Swanston, 28, pleaded guilty at Winchester Crown Court to three counts of misconduct in a public office between January and October 2012. Swanston, who served as a PC until November, was secretly recorded in her home having incriminating conversations with criminal associates. She accessed information from police systems while working in Southampton. Swanston, of Lomond Close, Portsmouth, was involved in intimate relationships with suspected and known criminals in Southampton, including drug dealers. The court heard she told suspected criminals they…
