I'm not sure what to make of this. It is after all in the Daily Mail, but if this gets the go ahead, I really can see the majority of the population getting very worked up about it. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2326816/MPs-10k-pay-rise-But-say-Its-snouts-trough--pay-peanuts-monkeys.html I love the quote at the end: ‘Voters may not like it but if you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Unless our pay goes up, the decline in the quality of people prepared to become MPs and Ministers will increase and the whole country will suffer.’ Should that not apply to every occupation then?

A police watchdog today refused to open an inquiry into claims officers tried to smear the family of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence — saying there was no evidence to support the allegations. The Independent Police Complaints Commission said former Met officer Peter Francis, who says he was told to find “dirt” on the family, had not replied to a request to speak to it. The IPCC said Mr Francis also refused to speak to Derbyshire’s Chief Constable Mick Creedon, who is leading a probe on officers from the Yard’s Special Demonstration Squad. However, the IPCC said it will investigate former police chief Sir Norman Bettison over claims he tried to influence the way a wi…

It doesn't really inspire confidence in victims/witnesses does it. Now think forward to the proposed porn-blocking scheme and/or communications data retention. Another reason why the public should be concerned. Why the hell do they not use whole disk encryption? It's not difficult. :new_rtfm:

The family of a joyrider who was killed in a police chase have been awarded £20,000 in compensation. Father-of-one Lee Lewis, 22, suffered multiple injuries when his stolen car hit a wall during a 12-mile chase by four police cars in Port Talbot, south Wales. The five 'untrained' officers who gave chase had ignored orders from the police control room to stop the pursuit. They were given written warnings after an investigation into the fatal crash. Lewis' family have now been given £20,000 compensation - awarded to his seven-year-old son Iestyn. They were awarded an out-of-court settlement after a putting in a civil claim for negligence against South Wales Police. L…

I'm pleased that he's got gaol but isn't this roughly the same amount of time that the teenager who killed an off-duty PC got?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23433138 A police force must stop using number plate recognition technology after a warning from the UK's data watchdog. The Information Commissioner's Office said Hertfordshire Constabulary's use of cameras in and around the town of Royston was in breach of the law. It said the force had failed to carry out required privacy impact checks. The ICO's ruling may have wider significance for the gathering of number plate data in the UK. "It is difficult to see why a small, rural town such as Royston requires cameras monitoring all traffic in and out of the town 24 hours a day," said Stephen Eckersley, the ICO's head of enforcemen…
