A man armed with a knife has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to murder a police officer. Metropolitan Police officers used a Taser device on the suspect, in Battersea, south west London, at around 12.30pm today. The suspect was taken to a south London hospital with minor injuries. A police officer injured in the incident did not require hospital treatment, the Met said. A force spokesman said: "Police were called to Falcon Road, Battersea, to reports of a man armed with a knife, threatening members of the public. "Officers attended and the man proceeded to threaten police officers." Police said the man was apprehended on Este Road, at the junction with Falc…

Training for police firearms officers in London has been cut back to save money, the Evening Standard can reveal. Scotland Yard has reduced the number of hours allocated to “refresher” training for all authorised firearms officers in the force. Refresher courses for the Met’s armed response teams — known as Trojan units — have also been scaled back. Officers from the armed response teams patrol the capital 24/7 and were first on the scene at Woolwich after soldier Lee Rigby was killed earlier this year. Insiders say the training is being reduced to fall in line with provincial forces — the minimum required standard for police marksmen — and fear the move could put l…

The head of the Cleveland Police, no less, has caused an uproar by appearing to dismiss the importance of youths behaving badly in the streets. Jacqui Cheer, speaking on behalf of police chiefs, has said that the new legislation to replace ASBOs with a much wider definition of what constitutes antisocial behaviour is likely to criminalise youngsters who are simply "growing up" noisily. The sort of boisterous messing around (or hanging around) that may be annoying to older residents, she claims, should not be treated as delinquent or worthy of police time and attention. It may be tiresome but it is just adolescent obnoxiousness – not criminality. It has been forcefully po…

I have just been able to watch an uninterrupted "live" broadcast of Remembrance Sunday at The Cenotaph courtesy of Sky News - almost 90 minutes without any breaks (echoed by our local satellite provider who refrained from advertising during the whole transmission - very unusual). Significant as always was the attendance of HM Queen and the Royals but also representatives of 54 Commonwealth countries who fought alongside British forces on almost all fronts. So the service is of interest across the world. However, BBC World News not only failed to transmit any of the service but also failed to event mention the event in its new bulletin. Sad, really. I imagine the BBC trans…
