The Home Secretary has said it is “a positive sign” that police and crime commissioners (PCCs) have been prepared to use powers to hire and fire chief constables. Speaking a year after the first elected officials took office, Theresa May (pictured) said that while the power of PCCs to appoint and dismiss the most senior officers was contentious, it was a crucial element to their office. She added: “Chief constables have to know where accountability lies – it stops with the democratically elected representative, which is the police and crime commissioner. “While I am not going to get into the rights and wrongs of every decision by a commissioner to hire or fire a chi…

Dozens of foreign prisoners took control of a wing in Maidstone prison, in Kent, for more than three hours yesterday in a premeditated attack on prison staff. Prison staff 'feared for their lives' and retreated to safety when around 40 inmates began smashing up the Thanet wing of the jail. It is unclear what prompted the riot, but it came one day after Justice Secretary Chris Grayling banned violent and sexually explicit films as part of a clampdown on perks. . Officers carrying riot shields leave Maidstone Prison in Kent after the three-hour violence was eventually quelled IHours after the row, up to 70 prisoners began rioting in a G4S-run Rye Hill, a private Ca…

It is an English summer evening and an elderly man quietly makes his way along a city centre street. Until he is confronted by a girl who attacks him, pushing the 80-year-old to the ground. The unidentified thug spat in his face and left him sprawled on the pavement. The sickening and unprovoked attack was captured on video by a passer-by using a mobile phone camera and shared on Facebook. Police are treating the attack as serious malicious wounding, punishable with up to five years in prison. The footage shows the girl knocking the Asian man to the ground in Coventry city centre last Saturday at 8.30pm. She was flanked by three men as she continued hurling abuse and…

The heads of MI5,MI6 and GCHQ have just been before the committee. Why, I wonder, were they called there in the first place for everyone to see. By the nature of their positions I think that regardless of the subject matter, they should have been questioned behind closed doors, thus keeping their identity unknown. I'm certain that they would have thought of that themselves, but surely, it puts their safety at risk. What on earth will HMG do next I wonder, will they call the heads of our special forces to some committee or other to give evidence about something. By all means question people like that, but not in the public eye for gods sake. People like that are ultimately…

This story pleases me: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-24807719 Retiring police dogs in Nottinghamshire are to be given their own "pensions" in recognition of their "hardworking service tackling crime". The scheme, which the force says is the first of its kind in the UK, will help to ensure the animals receive any medical treatment they might require. Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping, who approved the fund, said it would provide ongoing funds relating to medical injuries or illnesses. It will come into effect next month. Mr Tipping said: "Financial assistance for police dogs injured or ill arising from their work has, until now, ended…

Now they are interviewing the heads of our intelligence service - is nothing sacred? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-24847399 Granted we need folk to be accountable, but broadcasting it live, albeit a 2 minute delay. It is about time there was a committee to interview all the bad eggs within Westminster, though which criminal will they have in the chair? This is already being discussed here Intelligence and Security committee so I am closing this thread

NFA? It was only yesterday I saw an article in the newspaper with the Chief of Police for Cumbria Constabulary criticising the ambulance service for failing to respond quick enough resulting in police officers "being forced" to convey victims to hospital in patrol cars! Absolutely stupid decision at face value.

In this shocking footage, the doorman is seen to grab the young man with both hands before lifting him into the air and hurling him to the pavement on Newgate Street in Newcastle City Centre. The man, who appeared to have approached the doorman immediately beforehand, then lies still as a passer by calls out: "There was nee need for that, like." The confrontation at approximately 1am on Friday September 27 is captured in a 37 second long clip entitled "Geordie fight with a bouncer" uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday October 9. In the clip, a young man in a blue shirt is seen to approach the doorman, who is stood by the Newgate Street entrance to Idols. The young man lif…
