"An arrested man has died in custody in a police cell. The 57-year-old had been held on suspicion of criminal damage to a motor vehicle at about 15:30 BST on Monday in Hillingdon, west London. He was taken to Uxbridge police station but when he was checked at about 07:30 BST on Tuesday he was "unresponsive" and was pounced dead at the scene. The police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission is leading the inquiry into the death. The exasperated caller rang to complain they were unhappy about their newly-fitted bathroom and wanted to know what police were going to do about it. Armed members of a Metropolitan Police kidnap unit carried out a secretive operation in Ipswich this evening as shocked neighbours looked on in disbelief. Officers wearing protective vests and balaclavas arrived in St George’s Street at around 7pm as part of an undisclosed operation. Armed with guns and carrying shields, the officers spent more than an hour at the Dyke Street end of the road, which was closed to traffic. Police officers from the rest of the UK have demanded to be armed with guns if they are drafted in to deal with public disorder during the marching season. The Police Federation of England and Wales has raised concerns that personnel who could serve here this summer are not being sufficiently paid, trained or equipped to deal with rioting. Forces from Britain are on standby to deploy personnel to Northern Ireland within 24 hours should the need arise during the parading season. A Chief Constable has been suspended while he is the subject of a police investigation. West Yorkshire's Chief Constable Mark Gilmore is being investigated by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and has been suspended by Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson. Deputy Chief Constable Dee Collins will take the helm in the interim while the investigation is carried out. A man held a knife to his throat and threatened to take his own life at Victoria station this afternoon, reports suggest. In shocking pictures posted online by commuters, the unidentified man - who is in his 30s - can be seen holding a large knife to his throat at the central London overground station. Paul Somerville, 21, was in custody when he fell from a "cell on wheels" in January 2012 in County Londonderry. Days later, he died in hospital as a result of serious head injuries.
