Surprise discovery: officers found a cannabis farm @MPSHaringey/Twitter Police officers in Haringey got more than they bargained for when they were called out to investigate reports of a burglary. However, when the officers searched the property they discovered something entirely different - a huge cannabis farm. They also found a notice tacked to the wall with a list of house rules, which included, somewhat ironically "No smoking anywhere in the house. Even with the door/window open." Greater Manchester Police chief Ian Hopkins said some burglaries may not be responded to immediately in future. The Home Office is rewriting the Whitehall funding formula for police. Meanwhile ministers are negotiating on the settlement the Home Office itself will receive at the Spending Review. 'Footprint of terrorism' Mr Hopkins, recently appointed chief of the GMP, warned s…

The Metropolitan Police has defended its use of stop and search after the home secretary warned of "knee-jerk" policing. The Met Commissioner has previously acknowledged that a rise in knife crime could be connected to fewer stop and searches. Theresa May cautioned against a "knee-jerk reaction on the back of a false link". But the Met said the Home Office had "misunderstood" its approach. Speaking to the London Assembly in September, Met Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe acknowledged that police had relied too much on stop and search in the past. But he added that the scale of reduction in use advocated by the Home Office had "gone too far". In a speech to the Na…
