All officers 'should have degrees', says College of Policing 3 hours ago From the section UK All new police officers in England and Wales could require a degree in future, under plans proposed by the College of Policing. Currently there is no service-wide minimum qualification for new police officers, but the college says the job is now of "degree-level complexity". It is consulting on the plans, which if approved could run as a pilot in 2017 and be fully adopted by 2019. But the Police Federation said it fundamentally disagreed with the idea. The federation,…

The force said it was now entering into a formal consultation period with trade unions and staff The number of police community support officers (PCSOs) in the West Midlands could fall by 78% by 2020 under proposals announced by police. Plans to cut their number to 119 were "hugely regrettable but unavoidable," said West Midlands Police (WMP). Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said PCSOs would be the first expected casualty of the government's "continued attack on policing". The Home Office said police still had sufficient resources to do their work. Changes made by the government since 2010 have made it "easier for the police to do their job" by cutting re…

How the uniform sponsorship could look Police and crime commissioner Olly Martins has been pilloried for suggesting that sponsorship of Beds Police uniforms and vehicles could help the force out of the financial crisis it faces. Mr Martins continues to plead with the government for additional funding, but in the meantime has not ruled out the possibility of ‘ethically vetted’ firms boosting the force’s coffers. The PCC has argued that he would rather raise money through commercialisation than lose more officers. Should this occur, who do you think should sponsor Beds Police’s uniforms and vehicles? https://www.facebook.com/heraldandpost/

Cash-strapped police forces could soon be allowed to interview suspects at the scene of crimes using body cameras rather than in police custody, Sky News has learned. http://news.sky.com/story/1583921/cheaper-justice-suspects-quizzed-on-bodycam Some obvious problems with this not least how is a solicitor going to be present, I can't see the government ditching that protection. Big Brother Watch is concerned about how the data gathered by the cameras will be collected and stored. They didn't seem to have the same concerns about the Y-Stop app.

Changes to the way government money is allocated to police forces in England and Wales will be delayed, Police Minister Mike Penning has said. He apologised to the Commons for a "statistical error" in a new formula which assesses population size and other data to calculate funding. The issue has caused "a great deal of concern to police forces", he admitted. The proposed changes for 2016/17 will now be delayed, Mr Penning said. The Home Office did not say for how long. Mr Penning said the government "regrets" the mistake and apologised to MPs and to all 43 police forces in England and Wales. Answering an urgent question in the …

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-34743906 So youths are causing trouble so instead of dealing with the issues surrounding gangs, councillor Nasima Akther, would rather blame the Police... I suppose they are an easier target.

If there is support for the rise, a referendum will be held on 5 May. Updates on this story and more from Devon and Cornwall. Figures between a 10 and…

Three police forces are considering outsourcing their control rooms to private security firm G4S. The Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire forces have asked G4S to carry out a feasibility study to see what it might be able to offer. But Unison, the union for civilian staff, says it is "very concerned" about the move. One current police employee said it was "disgusting to try to turn a profit out of policing". Leicestershire Police's Assistant Chief Constable Phil Kay said: "The approach has been made to allow the three forces to gain information about what G4S might be able to offer in terms of service delivery, in areas such as contact management [999…
