Police forces in England and Wales could save £1bn a year by outsourcing backroom services to private companies, private security firm G4S has said. The firm signed a £200m contract with Lincolnshire Police in 2012, with G4S staff now employed in backroom roles. John Shaw, from G4S, said it has saved the force £6m a year - and other forces could "easily" make similar savings. The Police Federation of England and Wales said any changes should "not compromise public safety". Its chairman Steve White also said any savings would have to be reinvested into policing. G4S, which faced heavy criticism when soldiers had to be deployed at the London Olympic…

Police cuts expected to be announced in next week's Spending Review may "reduce very significantly" the UK's ability to respond to a Paris-style attack, Home Secretary Theresa May has been warned. The advisory comes in a restricted document prepared for Mrs May by one of the UK's most senior police officers. It says the ability to mobilise large numbers of officers would "reduce very significantly across the country". The Home Office said it would not comment on a leaked document. The BBC has seen key paragraphs of the document, Implications of the Paris Attack for UK Police Preparedness. It suggests further cuts to police budgets would affect the…

How safe can we be? On the night of the Paris atrocity I was out with the Bedfordshire police, watching what they do and what they can no longer do. Blue lights flashing, dashing through the streets of Luton and Bedford in the patrol car, I talked about cuts with Olly Martins, the police and crime commissioner. As we spoke about the local Islamist terror threat we couldn’t know how much closer it was coming. Another interesting piece seems some are waking up to what these cuts mean http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/nov/17/britain-police-cuts-theresa-may?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Add_to_Firefox
