A senior Devon and Cornwall officer said the annual budget of £284m was expected to be cut by £54m Devon and Cornwall Police is preparing to lose another 500 officers due to budget cuts, the BBC has learned. The force, which covers the largest geographical police area in England, would see numbers reduced to 2,500 - down from 3,500 in 2010. A further 200 Community Support Officers and 150 civilian support staff roles could also be axed. A special constable who served in Slough has been dismissed from the force without notice after keeping his pepper spray unsecure at home. Following a police misconduct hearing on Wednesday, special constable Declan Canavan was found to have breached safety standards following the incident in April. Canavan admitted to the breach at the hearing, which was held at Thames Valley Police headquarters in Kidlington, Oxford. Police are dealing with a "serious incident" in Glasgow where a bin lorry is understood to have crashed into a group of pedestrians. Local reports say the lorry mounted the pavement and crashed into the side of the Millenium Hotel in George Square. The Daily Record newspaper says the accident happened as a crowd of Christmas shoppers were waiting to cross the road outside Queen Street station. There are understood to be fatalities and the casualties are estimated to be in double figures.
