Call for killers' sentence review A campaign has been launched calling for the "unduly lenient" sentences handed to the killers of an off-duty PC to be increased. Two men were jailed on Friday for the manslaughter of Liverpool PC Neil Doyle, who was attacked on a night out. A series of tweets sent in the name of his wife Sarah called for their jail terms to be reviewed. The Attorney General's Office confirmed it had received a request to consider the sentences. But it could not confirm who sent it. PC Doyle, 36, died after he was struck by a "pile driver" punch in the early hours of 19 December 2014. Andrew Taylor, 29, was jailed for seven years and six months, …

The early morning raids in St Helens follow concerns from residents about street-level drug dealing and the associated anti-social behaviour. Officers will now seek to close 13 of the properties for three months in the hope it will disrupt criminal activity. The council is in a much better position to control fire and rescue than the cash-strapped and less popular police and crime commissioner All 123 of Cornwall’s councillors disagree with handing responsibility of the region’s fire and rescue service to the police and crime commissioner (PCC), a plan announced by David Cameron last week. In 2013, we passed a unanimous motion to retain governance of the service within Cornwall council, a decision I will repeat at every opportunity. Full full story please follow the link. Avon and Somerset PCC's office Sue Mountstevens insisted her concerns are "not a cry for more money" Avon and Somerset's police and crime commissioner has written to MPs over a proposed funding formula which could see the region losing 300 officers. Sue Mountstevens said the government's formula does not give enough importance to the population of the area. She said: "This is about Avon and Somerset taxpayers' money going to other policing areas with none of the same demand that [the area] faces. The police funding formula consultation closes on 15 September. But Ms Mountstevens insisted her concerns are "not a cry for more money". "I completely understand that pol…

More people are likely to die in shootings unless firearms rules are overhauled, a watchdog has warned. Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabularies said it was easier to own a gun than become a bus driver because of flaws in medical checks. The HMIC said the licensing system for England and Wales has fundamental gaps and previous recommendations for reforms had not been acted on. Only four of 11 forces it inspected were effectively monitoring licences. As of March last year, 734,336 people were entitled to possess and use shotguns or rifles under the legal system for licensing and certificating firearms in England and Wales. In total, these people owned more than 1.8…
