Police forces in England and Wales should work together more when buying equipment to cut the £1.7bn they spend each year, the government has said. A Home Office study suggests some forces spend much more than others on items such as batons and body armour. Since 2010 more than £200m has been saved through better procurement, but the government said more could be done. But police chiefs warned such savings would not be enough to solve the scale of cuts facing police forces. The study reveals what the police pay for 20 common items of uniform including shirts, high-visibility jackets and helmets, as well as front-line equipment such as batons, handcuffs and vehicles. …

West Midlands police are considering mounting the legal challenge to the way in which May has conducted a consultation exercise on a new police funding formula being carried out without the Home Office disclosing how each force is likely to be affected. Police Scotland have been ridiculed for spending taxpayers' cash re-branding their helicopter in Gaelic. Nationalist MP Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh tweeted a photo of herself sitting in the helicopter which bears the name of Police Scotland in the ancient Scots language. For full story please use the following link http://dailym.ai/1Unvb1F I actually thought this was a joke at first.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3220322/Bobbie-beat-Footage-police-inspector-dancing-Footloose-Pride-parade-internet-sensation.html I don't care that she is gay, I don't care that she likes dancing but I do care that a Police Inspector doesn't know that a group of people taking part in an event representing one organisation are a "contingent" and not a "contingency" - I just wonder how she copes with reviewing her officers' statements

Big city police forces could face deep cuts next year, according to figures in a leaked internal analysis. One of Britain’s largest police forces is threatening to launch a high court action against the home secretary as analysis reveals that Theresa May is secretly planning a major switch in millions of police funding from city forces to county constabularies, the Guardian can disclose. West Midlands police are considering mounting the legal challenge to the way in which May has conducted a consultation exercise on a new police funding formula being carried out without the Home Office disclosing how each force is likely to be affected. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3214050/Model-glassed-BIT-bar-manager-drunken-rampage.html Maybe I am just being my usual illiberal self but it strikes me that this case reported in the Daily Maul is another example of a crazy sentence. The culprit was effectively brawling in a bar in the centre of Manchester (a very usual occurrence these days as the once giant officers of the Manchester City Police no longer exist to cow potential trouble-makers into good behaviour) but because she is an aspiring TV presenter and is going to university next month, she gets let off a custodial sentence and her compensation payments will, no doubt, be paid from her stud…

Police cars with no sirens risk response times, federation says - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-34124935 Police cars with no sirens are being used for emergency responses, delaying officers and potentially preventing arrests, the Police Federation says. West Midlands Police has a fleet of 109 Vauxhall Corsa cars intended for neighbourhood policing. The Federation, which represents rank and file officers, said the vehicles had been used for more than 100 urgent calls in the last 12 months. The West Midlands force said the Corsas were "not intended for response work". The Federation's health and safety official Pete Harkness said: "Officers are order…

Boris Johnson, the London mayor, has said the 314 people arrested at this year’s Notting Hill carnival was “simply too many” amid concerns over a surge in knife crime. Scotland Yard is to review policing of the event after the highest number of arrests since 2008, when Europe’s biggest street festival ended in a riot. For full story please use following link http://www.theguardian.com/culture/2015/sep/01/notting-hill-carnival-surge-knife-crime I hope the officer makes a full and speedy recovery. Never experienced this carnival but sounds a wonderful event to be deployed to.
