Credit inquiry into 300 officers A total of 35 cases of credit card misuse are being investigated More than 300 Metropolitan Police (Met) detectives have been investigated on suspicion of misusing corporate credit cards, following an audit of the force. Of these, 46 cases have become criminal investigations overseen by the police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). The audit had been commissioned by the Metropolitan Police Authority which will discuss its findings on Monday. A spokesman said the force had no comment to make. The Metropolitan Police gave 3,533 American Express credit cards to its officers and staff in 2003, in an attem…

The Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police Colin Port says he is prepared to go to jail rather than return suspected child pornography. Officers investigating an alleged paedophilia case in Bristol raided the Leicestershire home of discredited computer expert Terence Bates, 68. They seized images of suspected child pornography and computer hard drives. But before the items could be examined, the High Court ruled the raid unlawful and said they should be returned. Bates obtained notice of a judicial review at the High Court after police investigating a possible paedophile conspiracy carried out the raid, in which 87 hard drives were taken. Two senior judges at the…

An Indian solicitor and two women who both claim to be his wives have been jailed for the roles they played in the biggest visa scam ever seen in Britain. Children aged as young as ten are being smuggled into the UK to work in dangerous cannabis factories. Underage workers from countries including Vietnam and China are among those being trafficked to work as 'gardeners' in the illegal factories. Gangs bring them over to Britain, waiving the £15,000 fee they would normally charge to smuggle people over, because the child labour can yield millions of pounds in profit. It is estimated that six per cent of children trafficked here are forced to work in such factories. Crimestoppers drugs campaign These figures have come to light as Crimestoppers launches a week-long campaign to encourage people to pass on information about …

Some local authorities in London will be offered a share of £56.5million from the government to help tackle youth crime. The money will be offered to 13 local authorities through the Youth Crime Action Plan, and will help to fund youth workers and combat gangs. It is part of the government's wider plan to intervene sooner and to prevent young people from becoming involved in a life of crime in the first instance. The money will also help young people who have been in trouble to rebuild their lives. If this is spam as I suspect it is, your links have been removed. David.

A very 'Special' day is planned in Enfield. On Saturday 27th June, the borough will be entirely patrolled by officers in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary (MSC). Not only is this a first for Enfield, but a first for the MPS. Special Constables are volunteer Police Officers. They wear the same uniform as regular officers; they have the same powers and responsibilities. On 27th June, the twelve hour tour of duty will see the MSC responding to calls, patrolling hotspots and undertaking any other operational duties required on the day. Chief Inspector Ray Rogers, Partnerships, Enfield Borough: "The MSC is set to grow significantly in numbers towards 2012. This day wi…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_y...ire/8093500.stm The Taser guns, which can hit suspects with a 50,000-volt charge, are currently only used by North Yorkshire Police's specialist firearms officers. The force said it expected up to 10 officers to be trained in operating the weapons by the end of the year. Amnesty International said it was concerned about the increasingly widespread use of the weapon in the UK. The pistol-like guns use compressed air to fire two darts that trail a cable back to the handset. Insp Nick Wattan of North Yorkshire Police said the officers would receive extensive training before the guns were deployed. 'Seismic shift' "The Home …

Bespoke policing: An officer hides behind the beach hut, hoping to catch speeding cyclists on the rainy promenade This police officer looks as if he is engaging in some rather furtive – though boring – detective work. In fact, he is using the beach hut as cover to catch out speeding cyclists on a windswept promenade. He was caught clocking offenders with a handheld speed gun as they pedalled by. If they exceeded 10mph they were stopped by a 'seafront ranger' and given a leaflet and a talking-to 'I didn't see the police officer at all. The next minute, I was stopped by a council officer who said I had been caught on a speed camera,' said 26-year-old Nick Lomax, wh…

Six Scotland Yard officers have been suspended over allegations of "waterboarding" drug suspects. The men are said to have pushed the suspects' heads repeatedly into buckets or bowls of water in a bid to force them to reveal the locations of drugs. The accusations suggest they were simulating the notorious "waterboard" torture techniques employed against al Qaeda suspects by CIA staff. The process involves hooding and strapping a suspect to a board and then tipping him head-first into a bath of water. The effect is to make the suspect believe he is drowning. It comes as Scotland Yard is investigating similar allegations against the British Security Service MI5. The i…
