Firearms officers could have colluded to produce false accounts of the shooting of a barrister in London, a court has heard. Mark Saunders, 32, was killed after exchanging fire with police from his £2.2 million flat in Chelsea in May. A total of seven marksmen fired 11 shots at him at the end of a six-hour siege, it has emerged. In a landmark high court case, Mr Saunders' family are challenging the accepted practice of police being allowed to debrief and confer before producing their statements of what happened. The family fear this provides potential for a cover-up because such methods create "a substantial risk of collusion and of contamination". A ruling on the …

Three police officers face disciplinary action after "misleading" information was added to the custody record of an injured prisoner who later died. CCTV showed he was visited once before being found "unresponsive" in his cell which was a "failure in duty of care", the police watchdog said. Greater Manchester Police apologised for "failing" Mr McLean's family. Mr McLean was found sleeping at a bus stop in Gorton on 10 April and was taken into custody over a warrant for failing to appear in court. He…

The Court of Appeal has limited police powers to keep pictures of protesters in case they go on to break the law. Judges said police had been wrong to retain pictures of a lawful arms trade activist who was not suspected of any criminal offence. The Metropolitan Police said they acted reasonably in retaining pictures of the campaigner, Andrew Wood from Oxford. Welcoming the judgement, Mr Wood said that the onus was now on the Met to review its retention policies. The court has told the Met to destroy the photographs if it does not challenge the ruling in the House of Lords. The force has indicated it will not appeal. Mr Wood argued that police had harassed him an…
