Tony Bull, 23, appeared at Sutton Magistrates' Court charged with attempted grievous bodily harm. It followed an incident in Carshalton, south London, at about 8.30pm on Sunday. The officer, aged in his thirties, chased the suspect and arrested him in a nearby street after he was attacked at the funfair. Det Sgt Nick Burrows, who is leading the inquiry, said the policeman suffered a minor wound to his neck and was protected from more serious injury by his stab-proof vest. Mr Burrows added: "This was a random attack on an officer. His Metvest p…

Police have revealed that a 16 year old cyclist was knocked down and killed by a police car which was responding to an emergency without its siren on. Khaleel Khan was hit as he cycled over a pedestrian crossing in East Ham, east London, in the early hours of Saturday. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the patrol car had its lights on, but was not using its siren. "The car was answering an emergency call. The London Ambulance Service attended, but the cyclist died at the scene", said a Met Police spokeswoman. A post-mortem examination at East Ham mortuary showed that Khaleel died from a broken neck. One police officer has been suspended from driving and an inv…

Hazel Blears – The Awful Truth. June 3, 2009 by inspectorgadget From banning the word "Christmas" to avoid upsetting Muslims, to spending money apologising for slavery (even though we were not even formed until years after abolition) Ruralshire Constabulary has always 'been there' for Hazel and her type. Our Senior Officers, despite privately knowing a damn site better, simpered over each new politically correct phrase, ludicrous wrong-headed initiative and downright stupid new policy suggested by Blears. Strangely enough, when the thought of a few large regional police forces was tabled, ACPO suddenly grew a collective …

Jacqui Smith is expected to stand down as home secretary in a reshuffle, Whitehall sources have told the BBC. Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to reshuffle his cabinet after Thursday's elections. It is understood she does not intend to quit as an MP and plans to defend her Redditch seat at the general election. Mr Brown confirmed to the BBC he is planning a reshuffle but refused to be drawn on individual ministers' roles. It has been reported that Ms Smith, 46, told him two months ago that she wanted to step down as…

Northern Ireland's Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde is to leave his post and become president of the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo). Sir Hugh, who has been in charge of the PSNI for seven years, narrowly missed out on becoming Metropolitan Police Commissioner earlier this year. Acpo's 342 members voted on Wednesday for their choice of president. "To have been elected as the next President of Acpo is a great honour," Sir Hugh said. "I believe that UK policing is strongest when it is professional, operationally independent, and based on trust and accountability. "Above all, our decisions should be tested against the reason for which we all joined policin…
