A former royal protection officer accused of a £3 million betting and property scam has claimed colleagues played poker and traded porn while working at Buckingham Palace... S Tyne cop died in A19 crash A South Tyneside policeman killed in a crash on a busy road. Pc Neil Gartland, who worked at South Shields police station, died after his car became trapped between two fuel tankers on the A19 on Friday night. The fatal collision was the first in a series of three crashes, which resulted in a 31-vehicle pile-up in foggy conditions. Pc Gartland, 38, who lived in Sunderland, had worked at South Tyneside area command for eight years. An opera singer who became a policewoman was sacked for cowardice after allegedly failing to help a colleague when he was attacked by yobs. Alison Wheeler, 39, was accused of standing by instead of using her CS spray as PC Rory Channon was punched and kicked to the ground outside a police station. One person has died and 10 others have been injured in a series of crashes in thick fog on a stretch of the A19 in County Durham. The first crash, involving two fuel tankers, two lorries and a car happened on the southbound carriageway between Peterlee and Wellfield on Friday night. While police and fire crews dealt with the incident, there were two further collisions involving 21 vehicles. It is thought the person killed was in a car trapped between the two tankers. Sunbather set on fire by thugs The 37-year-old was attacked in Kirkdale, Liverpool, on Thursday evening. Witnesses saw three or four youths running from the area, a Merseyside Police spokesman said, before spotting the victim ablaze. Two Sussex Police officers have resigned following drugs accusations. Insp Mark Andrews and Pc Bobby Newton both left the force after being arrested on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs. It is understood that after answering bail Pc Newton received a caution for possession and Insp Andrews was released without charge. Sussex Police confirmed that two officers from the Brighton and Hove area had resigned from the force. Both officers spent part of the career at the city's gay, bisexual and transgender unit. Three appeal judges have ruled that a young mother who was killed when her car collided with a police car on a 999 call was 60% to blame for the accident. The Court of Appeal decided Rachel Cheesewright failed to keep a lookout to her right as she turned on to the A28 near Ashford in October 2005. Kent Police's liability was reduced to 40% in the civil negligence action bought by Miss Cheesewright's family. The force had appealed against an earlier ruling it was 100% to blame. Kane Barratt was part of a gang who threatened victims during robberies A convicted robber from Greater Manchester is being investigated after he was apparently able to update his Facebook page from his prison cell. Kane Barratt, 21, from Stockport, is being held at Lancaster prison and is believed to have updated his webpage from a mobile phone. The Ministry of Justice confirmed an investigation is taking place. Paul Dillon, who had a knife held to his throat in an attack by Barratt, has criticised prison authorities.
