Police should be given powers to seize young troublemakers' mobile phones or bikes as punishment for antisocial behaviour, the Conservatives said today. Chris Grayling, the shadow home secretary, said he wanted officers to confiscate such possessions for up to a month to deter badly behaved youths. He said losing their phone or bike would be a "21st century clip around the ear" for youngsters who stepped out of line, and would help disrupt gang activity. The idea is part of wider plans to give officers more discretion to hand out punishments in communities blighted by antisocial "yobs". Source STUNNED police gave chase to a UFO after it attacked their helicopter near a military base. The mystery aircraft zoomed straight at the chopper as the three-man cop crew prepared to land. But bright yellow police signs appealing for witnesses to serious offences are no longer such a feature of grim city streets - in London at least. "Privately, however, senior policemen say the ban is 'ridiculous'. I could not agree more. Do these signs increase crime? i doubt it, but i not have figures to prove it either way.

A student has been jailed for a minimum of 10 years for plotting to blow himself up using his own "suicide vest" and home-made explosives. Isa Ibrahim, from Bristol, was convicted at Winchester Crown Court of making explosives with intent and preparing terrorist acts in April 2008. He had denied both charges but pleaded guilty to a third charge of making an explosive substance. Prosecutors said Ibrahim was planning to attack a shopping centre. He was given an indeterminate sentence, with the judge saying he should serve a minimum of 10 years.
