Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics...-criminals.html It's an interesting about the rights of residents being placed above the rights of criminals. I just can't help wondering if this will actually have much of an effect, or if its just pandering to the public for votes. I'm inclined to think that naming offenders may not be particularly effective, as it mentions prolific offenders. I've seen a fair few people end up on a PubWatch ban list for a while, only to reappear within days of being removed from the list. Any opinions?

Detectives in Amber Valley are raising their profile to coincide with Operation Relentless. The officers normally travel to and from investigations in plain coloured cars but as part of a pilot scheme the cars in Amber Valley have been marked with the force crest and words 'police' on the front and rear. Detective Inspector Emlyn Richards, who is Amber Valley's crime manager, said: "This idea is a step away from how the CID has been responsible for policing in the past. "A large amount of CID officers' time is spent outside the police station and within the community. With the exception of the people we are visiting, the public don't realise that we are there. "De…

Police officer charged with rape A West Midlands Police officer has been charged with rape. The Crown Prosecution Service said Sgt Nicholas Clarke, 48, had been charged with one count of rape. His wife Joanne, 48, who is a civilian member of staff for the police force, has been charged with sexual assault on a female and supplying cannabis. West Midlands Police said both had been suspended from duty. The couple have been bailed to appear before Redditch Magistrates' Court on 27 October. West Mercia Police, which is investigating the case, said it related to an incident in Rubery, Worcestershire, in June. A spokeswoman said the matter had also been referred to …

Alan Johnson yesterday accused police of having the 'ludicrous and ridiculous' mindset that dealing with loutish behaviour is not their job. For info in an earlier story it stated this guy has sex offences dating back 30 years!! And the mother in question has been on the front page as someone tried to accost her 9 year old daughter....i must stress not this disgusting fellow as he was inside!!! SO whats the thoughts on one judge giving him an indefinate sentance for public protection and then others cutting it too 2 years...out in 1!! Daily we see people who are risks to the public being released, people who we are told have a high chance of reoffending and yet they get handed minimal jail terms for crimes that turn peoples stomaches! http://www.thisislincolnshire.co.uk/news/M...il/article.html (yesterd…

Greenpeace Activists On Roof Of Parliament At least 50 environmental campaigners have climbed onto the roof of the Houses of Parliament to call for action on climate change. The Greenpeace activists unfurled banners which read: "Change the politics, save the climate." Greenpeace executive director John Sauven said: "We've got to raise the temperature of the debate because we are really running out of time. He claimed that both major parties had not spent enought time talking about green solutions to problems at the recent party conferences. He added that the activists planned to stay on the roof overnight, and in the morning MPs arriving for the start of Parliament…

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/a...et=0&page=1 The revelation of official ineptitude over the hounding to death of Fiona Pilkington and her profoundly disabled daughter came as no shock to me, because I have met Asher Nardone and her two sons. Asher is a blonde, energetic woman with care lines etched deep into her face. When she speaks it is like receiving the full force of an avalanche. Her life for the past few years has been a living hell and she needs to talk about it. She is a fighter but the tears come readily and I find myself hugging her, mopping up and sharing her tears. An interesting artical which seems to highlight the lack of a coordinated a…

Police officers who made blunders in two serial sex attacker inquiries could be prosecuted, the Independent Police Complaints Commission has warned. London street stalker Kirk Reid, 44, and taxi-driving rapist John Worboys, 51, were jailed earlier this year. Police were criticised for inaction, bad decisions and failing to link offences in both investigations. The IPCC is now investigating 14 officers, including a superintendent, and could press charges. Reid was jailed for life after attacking 27 women on the streets of south London. Following his conviction it emerged that police had identified him as a suspect four years previously - but taken no action. Victims …

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/8300451.stm What an honourable thing to do. The bit of the story I find odd is that the offender "voluntarily gave a DNA sample to local police at the request of UK officers" - he gave a sample when he knew he was guilty? Maybe the 'voluntary' aspect was theoretical.

Linky Not a bad sentence, considering the normal leniency we tend to see all too often these days.
