The tax affairs of 27 MPs are being investigated by HM Revenue and Customs, the department has confirmed. HMRC said it would not reveal the identities of the MPs involved or elaborate on what is being looked into. The move follows a warning in July from HMRC head Dave Hartness that MPs would be placed under extra scrutiny in revelations about expenses claims. A spokeswoman said: "Inquiries are an integral part of HMRC's work ensuring that everyone pays the right tax." She added: "An inquiry does not necessarily mean that there is a problem. Most inquiries are quickly closed". Click

The body of a newborn baby boy has been discovered in a black bin liner at a Lincolnshire waste site. The baby's body was found wrapped in a heavily bloodstained cloth at the Greenstar Recycling Plant near Skegness on Thursday morning. A worker checking for glass in material brought to the site for recycling made the find, said police. A search is now on to trace the mother. Police believe she could be in urgent need of medical help. Detectives believe the mother may be from the Skegness area as household bins were collected in the town earlier in the week and delivered to the plant on Wednesday. However, officers are not discounting the possibility that the moth…

For Heather Barnett's family and friends this is a particularly painful time of year. In less than a month, there will be another anniversary - it will be seven years since the mother of two was murdered in a frenzied attack at her home in Charminster, Bournemouth. Her body was discovered by her son, Terry, then 14, and daughter, Caitlin, then 11, as they returned from school. Her killer still has not been caught. The family of Heather, who worked as a seamstress, say they have not given up hope, despite the years that have now passed. They are unhappy Dorset Police have not made as much progress as they would have liked, but they take comfort that detectives are sti…

http://www.policeoracle.com/news/Home-Secr...-ASB_20500.html What are the opinions of this esteemed forum: Are ASBO's any use in stopping anti-social behaviour? I appreciate that it is a difficult issue to police. However, in my opinion (and seeing the state of where I currently live), it appears like very little happens in certain areas, with ASBO's being used almost like badges of office amongst these groups. I understand that prisons are overcrowded, but there has to be a better option. In my observation, some of the people who could be described as serial offenders are those in council/trust property, and who never seem to work, yet have plenty of money for booze. …

Northumbria Police has used Tasers more than any other force in in England and Wales, Home Office figures show. The force recorded 704 incidents in which the stun guns where used in some way, even if only aimed, since 2004. The Metropolitan Police, which covers a population more than five times greater, used Tasers in 700 incidents. Northumbria Police said its policy for Taser training meant it had more officers available to use the stun guns than other forces. The Home Office figures are the first published since all police forces in England and Wales were authorised to give Tasers to non-firearms officers who are specially-trained to use the devices. 'Carefully tra…
