http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-12270302 An ex-police officer who committed a string of sex offences against children has been jailed for life and told he will serve at least 11 years. Daniel Lishman, of Northamptonshire, was convicted earlier of serious child sex offences. Coventry Crown Court was told the 37-year-old used jobs as a mobile dog-groomer and TV licensing officer to carry out at least eight offences. He was arrested after attacking a 12-year-old girl in Warwickshire. Lishman, of Thorpe Street, Raunds, also posed as a policeman to indecently assault two young girls, the court was told. The offences took place between early 2001 and February …

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-12249172 A mobile phone application which claims to identify adults posing as children is to be released. The team behind Child Defence says the app can analyse language to generate an age profile, identifying potential paedophiles. Isis Forensics developed the tool after parental concerns over children accessing sites on their mobiles. But child protection experts warned against such technology lulling people into thinking they are safe. Child Defence project leader James Walkerdine, based at Lancaster University, said: "This software improves children's chances of working out that something isn't right. Parents told …

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-12262739 More than 40 police officers in Scotland have been convicted of a criminal offence since January 2009, it has emerged. Figures show the crimes ranged from speeding to drugs and firearms offences. A total of 43 officers were convicted of criminal offences between 1 January 2009 and 2 December last year. The figures were obtained by a Freedom of Information request sent to all eight Scottish police forces. The Press Association information request showed that the majority of crimes were for traffic violations, but others included assault, attempts to pervert the course of justice and breach of the peace. They were m…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-12223647 A Leicestershire police beat team is to operate from a hotel room after its existing office was earmarked for closure in a cost-cutting drive. Last month the force announced it will have to make more than £19m of extra savings over the next four years following government funding cuts. Leicestershire Police is to close 12 of its buildings following a review of its premises. It found they were no longer in the right position or proving too costly. The Kegworth officers will move from their Derby Road base and operate out of the Best Western Hotel from the beginning of February. A spokeswoman for the hotel …

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-devon-12265608 A police custody manager has been sacked by Devon and Cornwall Police for falsely claiming overtime and leave. Mark Reeves was employed as a senior detention officer at Launceston police station. The force said the allegations were so serious that a criminal prosecution was considered, but was deemed "not in the public interest". The exact value of the deception, reported to be about £1,000, has not been revealed by police. The dismissal follows a two-day disciplinary hearing, chaired by the force's head of criminal justice Supt Chris Brown. The force said it held regular reviews into potential false overtime cla…

I saw an article on the internet about a US woman who was waiting for 35 minutes on hold to 911 whilst an intruder broke into her house because: 1. As she was on a mobile phone, the call was routed wrongly and 2. Due to cuts, there were only 6 police covering 583 square miles. Nice to know it's not just us who are suffering these cuts in service! (well, it's not nice at all really)

A torture victim who was refused asylum 'deliberately' stole clothes and then begged to be sent to prison in a desperate act to find a 'home'. Iranian Motijaba Panahi, 25, came to Britain to seek asylum a year ago after being routinely beaten and tortured at the notorious, and now closed-down, Kahrizak Detention Centre near Tehran. But his application was turned down, meaning he can't get a job, benefits or a place to live. In desperation he turned to shoplifting and on January 12 he stole £35 worth of clothing from Primark in King Street, Hammersmith. It was his third offence after magistrates in Liverpool had previously given him a conditional discharge…
