Policing Minister Nick Herbert MP has praised the approach taken by Surrey Police and Surrey Police Authority to put more police constables on the frontline through restructuring the Force. http://surrey.police.uk/media/news_item.asp?area=12&itemID=13651 On paper these figures give hope to all Police forces, but i am sure someone can put the figures into perspective.

http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/local/east-hampshire/locks_activated_by_text_message_cut_bike_crime_1_2389916 BIKE locks activated by mobile phones have been hailed a huge success in tackling bicycle thefts. The innovative Wasp (Wireless Asset Security Protection) devices have been given away free to students at the University of Portsmouth, which had previously seen a high number of thefts. The devices have built-in sensors attached to a D-lock and work with CCTV to prevent bikes being stolen. They are activated by sending a text message after the bike is locked at dedicated racks across the university’s campus in King Henry I Street and Portland Street. If som…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lancashire-12396506 Police in Lancashire believe they may have solved a 35-year-old murder case thanks to advances in DNA evidence. Joan Harrison, 26, who was found dead in a derelict garage in Preston in 1975, was once thought to have been killed by the Yorkshire Ripper. But detectives said DNA found at the scene matched that of Christopher Smith from Leeds, who died in 2008 aged 60. The Crown Prosecution Service said police had gathered enough evidence to charge him with murder if he was alive. Miss Harrison, who had worked as a prostitute, was found dead in a garage in Berwick Road, in the Avenham area of Preston, on 20 Novembe…

More than 1,900 people have signed a petition calling for the banning of the "kettling" tactics that have been used by police to contain protesters. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-12293394 1,900 is a very low number, are these the 1,900 who have been caught up in this tactic? I am guessing these people will petition the Police on any tactics they use, except if Police decided on leaving them to roam free, and create as much trouble as possible.

A man who crashed his car after a 135mph chase down the M6 blamed police for causing the accident, Carlisle Crown Court heard. Mark Latham, 39, crashed into the central barrier near junction 41 near Carlisle after police, who had been pursuing him on the southbound carriageway for several miles, used a stinger device to deflate the tyres of the Mercedes he was driving. As police were helping him from the wreck he rounded on them saying: “Some idiot threw out spikes. You could have killed me!†Latham then insisted that his driving had been “fine†until that moment, prosecutor Alan Lovett told Carlisle Crown Court yesterday. And he said he had been in full control…

SIX police stations in North Staffordshire are to shut and be sold off to help save £20 million. Police chiefs are set to close stations in Burslem, Stoke, Kidsgrove, Newcastle, Stone and Uttoxeter in April. It comes as the force plans to save £20 million from its £190 million budget by March 2013 because of cutbacks in Government funding. The closures – which have sparked anger among community leaders – will leave only Hanley, Longton and Tunstall stations open in the city and Leek and Cheadle in the Staffordshire Moorlands. It means: Burslem will close and response officers will be briefed at Tunstall; Stone will shut and officers will be briefed at Staffor…

A Muslim protester who daubed a war memorial with graffiti glorifying Osama Bin Laden and proclaiming 'Islam will dominate the world' walked free from court after prosecutors ruled his actions were not motivated by religion. Tohseef Shah, 21, could have faced a tougher sentence if the court had accepted that the insults - which included a threat to kill the Prime Minister - were inspired by religious hatred. But - citing a loophole in the law - the Crown Prosecution Service chose not to charge him with that offence and he escaped with only a two-year conditional discharge and an order to pay the council £500 compensation after admitting causing criminal damage…

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wear-12159983 A man was handcuffed and "arrested" at his home in County Durham by two bogus police officers. It happened on Friday evening at a four-bedroomed semi-detached property in Maythorne Drive, South Hetton. The fake policemen wore what the victim described as "very convincing" uniforms. They knocked on the door of the house, announced they had come to arrest the occupant, sat him on a chair and handcuffed him. The bogus officers fled when a friend of the victim arrived at the house and became suspicious. They are thought to have made their escape in a dark Citroen saloon car, possibly in the company …
