General Policing Discussions

Hi Everyone. It's a bit chilly out there and we could be in for a long winter. Let's pool our collective wisdom. Do you have any tips to share or products to recommend on how to stay warm when out and about on foot patrol in the early hours during winter. Obviously gloves come as standard kit. I've all ready bought thermal insoles for my boots. Anthing else?

This is just a question I find interesting, many people may have different opinions. Here is mine and what is yours :-) I got told that a good officer is someone who knows the law, someone who can support their actions with a strong piece of legislation, and keeps in touch with new laws and change in legislation and good knowledge about the officers area. Great customer service, great at teamwork and someone who is always prepared for anything? Sorry if this thread has already been made. Just like to hear your opinions ;-)

Given the pressure on police budgets, and the various reports that it is inevitable that 'front-line' policing will be affected, do those of you at the 'front-line' see any value in roles such as these: A day in the life of Community and Diversity Officer (CaDO) Deb Beasley - Royal Borough Especially as there appears to be quite a few of them in TVP: (bold is my emphasis).I can see there being, perhaps, a couple of these in a force as large (in terms of numbers and area) of TVP, but to have a plethora of such (as the Daily Mail puts it) non-jobs appears to go against the grain of cash-strapped services.

The lead PC uses an inappropriate phrase and describes the son as 'Fatally injured' (otherwise known as dead)... he then states that they don't know any of the details and tells the mother that if she wants more details she must call a phone number, the reference started with the letters DOA!

Hi, Just a quick question, if an officer failed to make an arrest in the correct manner i.e he didn't tell the dp what he was arrest for or something similiar to that, what would the consequences be for the officer who made the arrest if this was found out? Any help much appreciated.

Hi guys. Firstly I'd like to say thank you for welcoming me to your site. As a new Special Constable it's nice to see such a large user-base all interconnected by this site. Now, to this business in hand. I recently received my new wonderful police pocketbook. As I'm new I've had the idea of putting together a sized piece of paper on the back page with little handy tips sort of like a cheat sheet. Is there anything that you can recommend to put on it? I have the GOWISELY acronym and some phone numbers but I'm wondering if there is anything else you could suggest? Many thanks in advance! Adz5765

Hi guys (and gals) I cant help but think that there is too much recent ex kit available to Joe Public on the internet on such sites as Ebay. Just a quick search revealed hi-viz jackets, fleeces, trousers, helmets (including plates), body armour, tunics, badges, handcuffs, belts, airwave equipment etc etc etc Somebody could easily knock together a fake uniform from these bits and pieces on ebay and waltz around the streets impersonating a Police Officer.

Hi, I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm thinking of joining the Police as a regular and transfer between different departments (armed, mounted, dogs and motorcycle). Now this is the stupid part, I know that officers in the armed and dog sections work all the time but I never really see motorcycle cops or mounted officers patrolling unless there is some sort of an event. So apart from proving policing at events eg: protest, football matches etc. what else do Police officers in the mounted and motorcycle sections do?

Hi folks! Currently in my final stages of recruitment with the specials and on hold with regular recruitment till it re-opens. I have a job at the moment but it's hours are less than ideal. I've spent the last week or so looking for another job that I can do while I wait for recruitment in the regulars to start again that will also allow me to have enough spare time to dedicate to the specials. Avoiding the obvious "ineligible occupations" ... I was just curious as to what all you other Specials do and are their any companies around that appreciate your volunteer job? Thanks

This thread is basically asking the question on the tin. How many of you made off duty arrest's? You can give as much detail as you wish, and just to spice things up, how many of you had off duty incidents that you would like to share.

A lot of people on this forum are either wanting to be specials or are specials. (or regulars) reasons for this may be different. but in many cases, some specials are specials with the hope to become one day a regular constable. my question is, are you doing anything as well as being a special or trying to be a special to help become a regular constable? or if you are already a regular, what did you do? i appologise for any spelling mistakes :lol:

Just a general question. I went to a football match at the weekend where there were a number of male and female officers. I can't say I've ever noticed this but I saw a female officer wearing a custodian helmet. Is this a rarity or force specific ??? She wasn't a tall officer, quite small actually and I wondered if they were allowing the custodian to be worn to give that extra few inches in height appearance, or even safety. As I say it was at a football match and some trouble did kick off in the crowd. It would be interesting to hear if any force offers the custodian helmet to female officers and any particular reason why its offered. Don't get me wrong I've nothi…

I know there are no height restrictions now but I'm not the tallest person in the world. Just wondering if anyone else finds this an issue in their effectivness to do the job? I believe back in the day it was an issue but now support can be a radio call away so it's not as necessary. As a result of me not being the tallest person in the world, I often visit the gym and increase my strength as I know a 2 minute detainment can feel a million years while waiting for back up. my spelling is awful, sorry :-)
