General Policing Discussions

I was asked this question by some kids whilst on duty recently. Without wanting admissions of an offence from forum members, what do people think is the best answer? MP's can now be honest in having 'experimental' university years, should police officers be as honest? Or does it set a bad example?

Recently two leading professors said that alcohol was worse than Heroin for damaging people and the causes of crime. Do you agree with them?

Im just curious to see if anyone has used or prosecuted for any strange or unique, hardly used or just plain different legislation, or maybe something thats a good piece of law that hardly gets used? I suppose the most unique i've used was a successful conviction for the fraudulent alteration of a vehicle registration certificate. There's so much law out there that im sure there must be a few pieces of strong legislation that often get overlooked?

And so i was on my way home from work the other day and was following a Tesco van (the ones that drop shopping off to people). On the back, it suggests that the restriction is at 58mph - i've seen the usual 56 etc too. Can anyone see logic that supports companies who go through the trouble of fitting a restrictive devide to such vehicles whatever they may be? I'm guessing that most accidents will occur below 58 miles an hour so i cant see the logic there. Does it not cause more problems than good when you have a vehicle on a motorway who is travelling considerably slower than everyone else (especially in a 2 lane carriage way?) Hi all Having been made unemployed i made a claim for unemployment benefit (Jobseekers).They wanted all the ins and outs of the expenses that i get being a special. Anyway, i got a letter back today and they state its ok for me to claim substance,boot allowance etc,but my milage claim and Reimbursement given to me by Essex are going to be treated as "earnings" and i qoute " Legislation dictates that only travel costs incurred on the job itself can be disregarded and thus not treated as earnings.It specifically states any travel costs incurred for travelling from home to normal work place cannot be disregarded must be treated as earnings". Do all incidents involing police dischrging their firearms involve the death of the suspect? It seems that the media only report the incidents in which police kill someone but I imagine ther are plenty of incidents which the police only injure someone?

Hello all, just wondering if many on here are University students as well as specials? I'm interested to look at how you have found being a special, and people attitudes towards this, being the public you deal with or even other officers. What are everyone else opinions on Specials who are students? After my interview, speaking to the Sgt, he was saying he gets allot of students applying but not very many get through. Thanks

I am concerned that every year innocent members of the public and animals are injured by the reckless use of Fireworks, is it not about time that the Government banned the sale of Fireworks to MoP's and that all Fireworks displays be carried out on an organised basis. I am aware of attacks using Fireworks on Fire Crews and members of the other Emergency services, additionally the period of around the 5th of November creates a large amount of unnecessary additional emergency calls for the services which could be avoided in many cases with restrictions on the availability of the sale of Fireworks to only organised displays. Section 4, Vagrancy act 1824 Do you arrest the trick or treater or their parents / gaurdian?

Watching Coppers last week, must have been a hit! As on yesterdays shift, a 27 yr male was released after serving a 18 months of a 3 year sentence only to re-offend in the office car park opposite the prison and was caution by myself within 40 minutes of release and 1 hr and 10 minutes later was in front of the custody skipper...... I was just wondering has anyone else beat this record? Turning Disappointing when this happens, especially considering the amount of taxpayers money has been spent on these offenders, prior to the first stay in custody and indeed their actual stay in custody only to walk out and walk back in again!! ** edited to correct.

I have been wearing a poppy on my uniform for just over a week. Last weekend on nights i pinned it on friday. They are on sale in the refs room at the nick. I didnt and havent seen another bobby with one on yet. In addition on parade sunday night, the sgt in front of everyone said: its a bit early to wear a poppy isnt it, why have you got it on now ? It bothered me in the sense that the 11th November is/was just over 2 weeks away. The fact they are on Sale in the nick, what it resembles and ultimately ? Was it just another representation of the falling standards in the police, in relation to personal pride / appearance etc.
