The police pension scheme is one of the few "final salary" schemes still to be found. What's so great about final salary schemes? The amount you get is a percentage of the salary you retire on (or actually an average of the last few years salary). Here's a few suggestions to help you train and prepare for the job-related fitness test... Grip Strength You can improve your grip strength by holding a squash ball in your hand and crushing it as hard as you can for six seconds before releasing it. Repeat the process until your hand is tired. Practise this often. You can use waste paper rolled into a ball instead of a squash ball. Whilst entering the train station to catch the train home from work, I was stopped by a BTP officer. I was wearing my NYPD – ESU T-shirt which was given to me by a good friend who is an ESU officer serving with the NYPD, when I went to visit a couple of weeks back. It was a great, he showed me round his station etc but anyway back to the story. The BTP officer asked me ‘do you know why I have stopped you’, not having a clue I just said ‘no officer’. He then said ‘well I have stopped you, because of the T-shirt you are wearing, you are not allowed too’. Not wanting to argue will the Police officer I simply said ‘ok, that’s fine, but can I ask why?’…

In days gone by, most if not all forces operated some sort of cadet scheme. Many's the time now you read in force orders that Superintendent So-and-so or Sergeant Whatsisname has retired from the force after 30 years service, having first joined as a cadet. These days forces are once again starting to recognise the benefit of encouraging an early interest in the police and there are a small handful of forces which have cadets. Cadets wear uniform when on duty which (with the exception of footwear in most cases) is provided free of charge - see pic below courtesy of Lincolnshire Police. The reason to work, is in my very humble opinion to earn enough money to support yourself and enjoy nice things in life, and to plan for your future. Planning for the future comes in many guises, but the best way to have that nest egg for the future is a Pension. In times where employers are closing their doors to new employees to join a 'Final Salary Scheme', the Police still have one. Again in my opinion, there is no better final salary scheme than the Police Pension.
