"Big Al" is under investigation for a very serious offence. There are surveillance operations on him and evidence is being gathered in order to build up a strong case without Big Al knowing - the intention is to arrest him when they have the evidence and it is anticipated that this will take several months: an arrest too early will hinder the investigation. PC Probbie has heard some rumours around the nick that Big Al is possibly involved in some very serious stuff. He knows he is a local criminal and keeps his eye out for him as he is a dedicated young officer. He is, however, unaware of the operation focusing on Big Al. PC Probbie receives information from "Norman the…

Drivers obligations / Police obligations Shortened version: Car hits and seriously injures a cat Cat is not expected to live according to a vet on scene at the time Driver of said car is in serious shock following this incident It is NOT reportable as far as the driver is concerned but is it the officers duty to report it under his obligations as he was on scene? (I know the answer but am interested in what others think!)

I was recently thinking about the differences between making off without payment and obtaining services dishonestly, and cooked-up the following scenario. Perhaps it's not very likely to happen, but short of mediating I'd have no idea how to handle it: Adam gets into a taxi and asks the driver to take him from a bar to a nightclub. He knows the fare will be about £20 and has several times that in his pocket. He fully intends to pay the driver. Half way to the club, the drive makes a joke about Adam's hair. Adam is extremely offended and asks the driver to pull over immediately. There is £10 on the meter and Adam tells the driver that he is so insulted he refuses …

A quick one which has fuelled much debate, at least in my mind. If officers have a warrant to enter a flat for whatever reason (say drugs) but upon execution of the warrant they go into the flat and realise soon enough they have entered the wrong flat, are they then allowed to sieze the (hypothetical) 5 kg of heroin left on the table in the flat they have wrongly entered? There is case law which suggests that entry into a premises unlawfully will lead to any evidence becoming inadmissable in court. In the scenario above officers cannot lawfully seize anything in the flat, and if they call a response unit to come and seize it (would this be at all possible?) and would …

Driving home tonight I see a young lad on a 50cc moped, who was ignoring keep left bollards overtaking on sold white lines and doing excessive speeds (maybe 65ish in a 40, how on a moped I don't know!) I noted his VRM at the next set of lights but wasn't sure whether I should submit an entry onto our force intel system, my thinking behind this was if he gets pulled over in the future for the manner of his driving the officers would see that his manner of driving has been similar in the past.. I did think about phoning it in but decided against this. What would you do in this situation? Just ignore it? J

Evening all, A road on my patch has a no motor vehicles sign with white board underneath stating unless authorised. I was on patrol when i spotted a car down it but it was too far away to catch up with and so it got away. I've been looking into the offence but im being thick as i can't find it. So firstly, what is the offence, penalty and if it seems fairly innocent do you still nail them? Cheers Btw the sign is a circle with motorbike over car - just incase i got the sign completely wrong.

Witnessed something like this a couple of years ago.... A cyclist on their daily commute decides to cycle on the pavement for part of the route to avoid having to mingle with standing traffic. Said cyclist is fully aware that they shouldn't be on the pavement, so slows down and proceeds with due consideration for pedestrians. Approaching a busy bus stop, someone at the bus stop shouts in exceptionally aggressive tones: "You're gonna f****ing KILL SOMEONE YOU IDIOT!!!!" complete with the thousand yard stare just to ensure the desired level of intimidation is reached. Everyone at the bus stop is looking on in mild shock. Public order offence? Section 5 or section 4? Pe…

Say BUYER sees a car advertised on the GARAGE website and Autotrader site as having 60K miles on the clock and was also said to have 60K miles during the negotiation period, and this is the reason why BUYER buys the car - low mileage for age and knowing that a CAMBELT would be needing changing at 72K miles (which gives the BUYER 12K miles which with their driving habits will take 3 years to reach), is the GARAGE committing any offence if they then a day before the sale disclose the car has actually done 69K but they advertised it at 60K because it sounds better (and did secure a sale) This now gives the BUYER only 3K miles to change the said CAMBEL (less then a year befo…

You visit a local Kwik Fit garage as you know your brake pads and discs will need replacing soon. You are reasonably handy with a spanner and know that the brakes are roadworthy but you don't have the time to change them yourself. You go there for a free brake inspection and a quote on the parts and labour. A mechanic tells you to your surprise and annoyance that your brakes are well below the minimum and that you must get them fixed now. They give you a quote which is well above what you think is reasonable so you you decline as you want to get some other quotes from some local independent garages in your area. They then further tell you that legally they can't give…

Forgive me, i have a past of 'flat on it's face' thread starting. However, i hope that this is of intrests. A male told staff that he wanted to kill himself, when officers arrived - we took the male to the side and he confirms that he wants to kill himself. He opens some cider and sips the newly opened bottle. He is watched by officers as the male tells them, that he will comply after having a single sip. After confirming his identity by talking to him, we find that he too self-harms. With the concerns of possible hospital treatment, i took away his cider to limit the hospital refusing treatment. The grey area is - which power would i be best using? Or if any at al…

Near to where I live, there is a dual carriage way leading to a roundabout, the right hand lane is to turn right and the left hand lane to turn left or straight on. In rush hour you get people flying up the right hand lane, going round the roundabout and 'pushing in' Or occasionally you get the odd idiot just pushing in and cutting lanes, Are there any offences? Can't think of any...

Now I do have nunchucks ( well my dad does but martial arts purposes as he teaches it ) and a few machetes for camping and going on expeditions ( actually used for it , not for self defence ) and they are around the house and not all in 1 safe room or anything, How comes the police can seize weapons ( as they technically are adapted to harm? ) in your own home. I am confused as When I hit 18 I am going on an expedition to costa rica a…

What would you do in this scenario? There has been a late night collision between a taxi and a cyclist. The cyclist is injured but his injuries do not appear life-threatening. Before the ambulance takes him away, the cyclist accuses the taxi driver of dangerous driving. The taxi driver denies this and says that the cyclist was cycling erratically and wobbled into his path. There were four passengers in the taxi who (from smell) appear to have been drinking but are not disorderly. The front seat passenger agrees with the taxi driver and says the cyclist was talking on a mobile phone. The other passengers saw nothing. The phone has fallen on the road and been damaged. Th…

It is 2300hrs. You are on foot patrol in Acacia Avenue, which is on a well known 'pub route home' to a local housing estate. There have been numerous complaints from residents of Acacia Avenue of drunks urinating in their gardens on the way home from the nearby High Street. You hear a noise coming from a nearby garden. You investigate and find a person urinating copiously in the front garden of a house. The garden is surrounded by hedges and cannot be seen from the road. All the curtains in the house are open, and the house is in total darkness, so you can reasonably assume that no one is in. When you question the person he admits he does not live there, but got 'caught …
