A policeman shot himself in the head after his partner saw a text message from another person on his mobile phone. PC Mike Gard, 37, was off duty when Donna Shrubshall confronted him about the message at their home in Worlingham, Suffolk. Miss Shrubshall, his partner of nine years and the mother of his two children, told the hearing that she believed he had formed a 'friendship' with another person. When asked how he reacted, she said: 'He was okay. He just kept saying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry".' PC Gard who worked in towns across north Suffolk then left for his mother's home in Blofield Heath near Norwich, taking his licenced shotgun which he used once a year t…

Police leader Sir Hugh Orde has strongly denied claims that ministers had to intervene to boost police numbers during the summer riots. The respected president of the Association of Chief Police Officers said it was untrue and had caused the greatest anger he had ever witnessed in a 34-year career. In an impassioned attack, the president of the Association of Chief Police Officers said it was untrue and had caused the greatest anger he had ever witnessed in a 34-year career. "I have never sensed such anger in the service in my career as when officers felt they had been unfairly criticised for deployment tactics," he told a fringe meeting at the Liberal Democrat conferenc…

A Clifton man who harassed a police officer for more than a year has received a suspended sentence. At an earlier hearing, Peter Haywood, 59, of Bournmoor Avenue, admitted harassing the officer between 1 July 2009 and 31 July 2010. Haywood, who is an ex-detention officer with the force, had set up online campaigns and sent malicious correspondence to the officer. Said Sgt Jon Kerry, who investigated the case: “Haywood began a sustained campaign of harassment against the officer. His actions caused immense distress and fear for the officer and his family. At Nottingham Crown Court today, Haywood was given a 12-month sentence, suspended for 18-months. He was also give…

When a serial burglar plagued a tower of blocks police knew they had to come up with an inventive way to catch their prolific thief. But West Midlands Police were not to be deterred and laid an ingenious trap they knew the burglar could not resist - by setting up a fake house in a tower block in Birmingham. I'm a freelance journalist working for a national paper writing a feature about serving officers with second jobs, particularly in the Met. I suspect the numbers have gone up in the current climate with perhaps less overtime available and possibly partners working shorter hours or losing jobs. I wonder if any serving Met officers would be prepared to talk to me about what jobs they do, the reasons they do it, and the reaction they get from senior officers/peers. I've only joined the forum for this purpose and as far as I can see this post doesn't break the conditions of the forum. I don't expect an entirely unsuspicious or necessarily friendly response from the memb…

A student who was arrested under the Terrorism Act and kept in custody for six days has been awarded £20,000 compensation by the police. Rizwaan Sabir, 22, who was studying for a master's at Nottingham University, was arrested after downloading a terrorist manual for his research on al Qaeda. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2037708/Student-wrongfully-arrested-suspicion-terrorist-awarded-20-000-police.html#ixzz1YD2YYR00 Something odd about this one. Police did everything correctly got the warrants, got an extension, yet they pay out £20,000. From everything I can understand in this story, it seems it would be better for Police never to leave their …

http://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/news/local/off_duty_cop_punched_woman_in_dispute_court_told_1_3047319 Quite a sorry story really, if this is how it happened, that a police officer does the sort of things that we hate the most.
