http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14553330 MPs and justice campaigners say some of the sentences given to those involved in the riots in England are too harsh. Much as i hate to see anyone given an easy time for committing crime i can see their point. Although i acknowledge the fact that the offences are made more serious by being part of the disorder the burglars and shoplifters i deal with have 50+ offences and dont get anything near what the rioters did. Why is rioting and stealing so much worse than burgling a family home?

The police treated me like a criminal, says pensioner http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/police-treated-like-criminal-says-pensioner/story-13250997-detail/story.html Something in that story must be missing. Police Officer calling this old dear a druggie. This lady told Officers she was on drugs, all one can assume from that is that she is a drug addict. Her refusal to get out the vehicle when asked to, I believe a legal requirement. This lady did hit another vehicle, driving without due care. And DVLA backed Police up by taking licence off of her. Best bet file this one in the caves of the IPCC, and hope it dies along with the IPCC.

The clashes broke out as EDL leader Stephen "Tommy" Lennon addressed the crowd, telling them he had broken his bail conditions to be at the protest. He said: "I'm meant to sign on at a police station on a Saturday, I'm not doing that. I'm not allowed to go to a demonstration, I'm not doing that. "The credible outcome is I will be put on remand in prison for my democratic right. That's what's going to happen and when I go to court if they let me out of court with any bail conditions that restrict my democratic right to oppose militant Islam, I will break them the minute I walk out." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/03/sporadic-scuffles-break-a_n_947827.html So th…

From BBC News, August 2011 - apologies for the huge article! Link to source at end of post... As the courts deal with some of the hundreds of people charged in connection with the riots, igniting a row over whether the sentences being handed out are too harsh, the BBC asks what is the real cost of a criminal conviction? When college student Nicolas Robinson set foot in a Lidl supermarket as he walked home from his girlfriend's house, he probably didn't think his actions would land him behind bars. But stealing a £3.50 case of bottled water during the riots in Brixton has cost the 23-year-old dearly. Robinson, of Borough, south-east London, is now serving six months in ja…

Far right activists are to protest in the capital after ignoring moves by police and the Home Secretary to stop them. The English Defence League has told Scotland Yard it is leading a "static" demonstration in the wake of Theresa May's 30-day ban against marching in six areas. More than 3,000 officers will be available on Saturday amid fears of violence and clashes with opposition groups, including Unite Against Fascism. Campaigners have been in ongoing negotiations with police chiefs in the wake of tough measures introduced by Mrs May. It is the first time since the Brixton riots 30 years ago that police have requested powers to stop marches in London. Chief Superintend…

Figures obtained by the Evening Standard show the number of cases shelved by the London CPS team alone soared by 37 per cent in two years. The practice was highlighted in July when prosecutors dropped charges against 109 anti-cuts demonstrators who occupied the Fortnum & Mason store as it was not in the "public interest" - despite the crime of aggravated trespass attracting a jail sentence of up to six months. The new figures will trigger fears over the number of offenders who are allowed to escape action. It also raises serious questions about the Government's decision to slash 25 per cent from CPS budgets. Ex-criminal barrister and senior Conservative MP Anna Soubr…

Both officers were taken to York Hospital after the attacks, which occurred in separate incidents. One officer was kicked in the face while he tried to detain two people allegedly resisting arrest in the Punch Bowl pub, in Blossom Street, suffering a broken jaw. He had been called to reports of a fight at about 10.40pm on Saturday, when the incident happened, his colleagues revealed yesterday. Two Knaresborough men, aged 19 and 49, have been arrested and bailed. Details of the other attack, which happened on Friday, were not known last night. Nort…

UNDER-FIRE North Yorkshire Police chief Grahame Maxwell has been told he must leave his position next year following a decision not to extend his appointment. North Yorkshire Police Authority (NYPA) met behind closed doors today to consider Mr Maxwell’s future in his role as chief constable, following his request to extend his tenure. His term will now end in May. In a brief statement issued following the decision, the police authority said it had “every confidence“ that the chief constable would continue to lead the force well until his current fixed-term appointment ended. It said: “The detailed reasons for this decision and other matters relating to it are o…

The "have-a-go-hero" who tried to stop an armed suspect after a stabbing at the Notting Hill Carnival said today he feared he could lose his disability benefits as a result of his actions. Valentine Simatchenko, a former Russian policeman, was pictured trying to trip up the suspect as he fled the scene on Monday evening. Mr Simatchenko, who receives disability living allowance, today said he was afraid the picture mistakenly portrayed him as fit and active - and would suggest to officials that he was not in need of financial help. Mr Simatchenko, a veteran of Chechnya's war for independence who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and high blood pr…
