Sussex MPs are being urged to back calls for the government to rethink plans to cut police funding. Mark White, secretary of the Sussex Police Federation, has written to the region's 13 Conservative, two Liberal Democrat and one Green Party MPs. He said the cuts risked turning the force into a "dilapidated, demoralised fragment of its former self". Sussex Police needs to lose about 500 officer posts and 250 staff posts to achieve savings of £52m by 2015. Up to 300 police staff have already left the force since last November through a voluntary redundancy scheme. In the letter to MPs Mr White writes: "It has been noticeable that since…

Two Merseyside Police officers have been arrested and suspended from duty in connection with a disturbance prior to a Liverpool Everton match. A man suffered a broken jaw in an altercation on Anfield Road ahead of the game on Sunday 16 January. A 39-year-old sergeant and a 43-year-old PC were arrested on 17 August on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, police said. The two officers were off duty at the time of the incident. Six other people have been arrested in connection with the incident. A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "Both officers, who have been on restricted duties since the incident, were suspended from duty on 17 August 2011 foll…

Police forces across Britain spent more than £82million on translators for migrant criminals, victims and witnesses, it has been revealed. That is an increase of 60 per cent since 2004 when the European Union expanded to allow countries like Poland and other eastern countries to join. It also means that translation services for the police are costing an average of £75,000 a day and could fund 3,542 extra officers on the beat. The total cost was £82,403,168 over the last three years and averages at £1.5million per force, according to the Daily Express. As 16,000 police officers are taken off the front line to save costs, the figures have been met with anger. Simon Re…

Firm justice' for troublemakers: foreign rioters to be deported Foreigners who took part in last week's riots will be deported to send a tough message to troublemakers, the Standard has learned. More than 150 people arrested over the looting and arson attacks that started inLondon and swept England were born abroad, exclusive figures show. Now the Government has announced plans for rioters without UK citizenship to be deported "at the earliest opportunity". The move re-ignited the Coalition row over tough sentences being imposed on children and adults who took part in the disorder. Immigration Minister Damian Green told the Standard: "We strongly believe that foreign …

A woman jailed for accepting a pair of shorts stolen during the Manchester riots has been freed from prison after appealing her sentence. http://web.orange.co.uk/article/news/woman_jailed_for_accepting_loot_is_freed?pg=3#newscomments Were you really expecting anything else? Next she will be suing someone for her wrongful imprisonment. I am sure this nonsense will never happen again, we really taught these people to behave with 75 hours community service. Not to worry thou, Police do their work well, courts undo it all.

New CCTV of the riots in Birmingham shows police officers being shot at, the West Midlands force has said. The footage, which has been released by the police to encourage members of the public to come forward, shows a group in the Newtown area late on 9 August. The group, all masked and all wearing black clothing, caused extensive damage at the Barton Arms pub. Shots were also fired at the police helicopter and petrol bombs thrown at a marked police car, the force said. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-14601228 Forgive my ignorance, but i am not sure how many shots need to be fired to bring a helicopter down, but if that was their intention, then i can…

Prison governors last night said every jail cell in the country could be filled within weeks. The number behind bars has shot up by nearly 700 in seven days, prompting a warning that the pressures on the justice system are at their highest since the miner's strike. Inmate numbers now stand at a record high of more than 86,600 across England and Wales, thanks to recently jailed rioters and looters. That leaves fewer than 1,500 places before prisons hit their operating capacity and emergency measures are needed. The nightmare scenario could see a repeat of Labour's catastrophic early-release scheme, which benefited 80,000 offenders. Ministers will be desperate to avoid such…

There have been some, by UK standards, very heavy sentences handed down to rioters over the last few day. Two that stand out is 23 year old Nicholas Robinson was sentenced on Aug 11 to 6 months in prison for stealing a £3.50 crate of water. He has no previous convictions and pleaded guilty. Then there is Ursula Nevin, who slept through the riots, took the shorts from a £629 haul of clothing and accessories stolen from the Vans store in the city centre by her housemate Gemma Corbett. She has a 1 year old and a 5 year old children and also pleaded guilty. I think the deserve every day of their time inside. If it was not for the people on the periphery the hard core rioter …

My link Published on Sunday 14 August 2011 10:08 formatPubDate("Sun Aug 14 10:08:16 BST 2011"); A BRAVE volunteer police officer from Northampton has revealed how she combined her day job with helping to plan her daughter’s wedding and yet still found time to travel to and from London to help put down violent looting and rioting. Special Sergeant Anita Dunn, aged 46, volunteered to go to London on Tuesday following two of the most shocking nights of violence the capital has witnessed in decades. Anita, who works in an operations team at Barclaycard and is also a special in the Met Police, was allowed to clock off work early by her bosses and…
