South Yorkshire Police is to keep its own helicopter instead of signing up to a new national scheme. South Yorkshire Police Authority announced it would opt out of the planned National Police Air Service which is due to launch in April 2012. Opponents had warned the national scheme could mean a trebling of response times. The decision makes South Yorkshire the first police force in England to opt out. Charles Perryman, chairman of South Yorkshire Police Authority, said the decision was only made after a "long debate". He said: "The National Police Air Service representatives were unable to assure us that we could get the level of cover we require for our communities.…

A judge today granted anonymity to a police officer who used official records to snoop on dealers he was buying drugs from. The unprecedented order was made to protect a Scotland Yard officer who claimed he had been using cannabis for more than ten years to treat "nightmares and flashbacks." He said he had been forced to turn to street dealers when his internet source of "medicinal marijuana" was shut down in 2008. He accessed the files of two people who had been supplying him with the Class B drug apparently in order to "ensure his own personal safety." He admitted five breaches of the Data Protection Act at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court today. District Judge H…

Jailed: Jane Pike was captured on CCTV taking a bag from Gordon's wine bar. She was jailed for 14 months for seven thefts Staff at Gordon's came up with the 'Facewatch' database which allows shops and bars to instantly upload CCTV clips of the bag snatchers and witness statements online. The Metropolitan Police faces a £200million compensation bill from firms destroyed in the London riots. It expects to receive more than 1,000 claims from victims of the four days of near-anarchy when louts trashed and looted shops and set fire to buildings and vehicles. Despite government promises to foot the bill, police chiefs fear the cash-strapped Met will be left with debts of "anywhere between £50million and £200million" - on top of the £35.5million cost of overtime and buying in help from other forces. One of the biggest claims is from Transport for London, which is seeking £750,000 to help repay its £5.2million bill from last month's disturbances. TfL lost a…

When a serial burglar plagued a tower of blocks police knew they had to come up with an inventive way to catch their prolific thief. But West Midlands Police were not to be deterred and laid an ingenious trap they knew the burglar could not resist - by setting up a fake house in a tower block in Birmingham. These pictures show the dramatic moment the bungling burglar is snared - after police rigged the 'capture house' with miniscule spy cameras. Cunning detectives borrowed a flat in the Teviot Tower in Hockley, Birmingham from the council, kitted it out with secret cameras hidden throughout and then patiently lay in wait for the culprit. Say cheese! Teenage crook Bubba…
