Two men have been convicted of the racist murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence, 18 years after he was stabbed to death near a south London bus stop. Gary Dobson and David Norris were found guilty by an Old Bailey jury after a trial based on forensic evidence. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16347953 "The original failed investigation into the murder led to the Metropolitan Police being branded as institutionally racist.2 In your experience, any truth to that statement, or was it what I believe, a complete lack of evidence, or at least not enough for a conviction?

he Home Secretary's speech on the police on Monday was billed as a coherent ideological vision for the service in England and Wales. As she rubber-stamped proposed changes which will take tens of millions out of officers' pay packets, Theresa May emphasised that, while "some police officers will be disappointed by this outcome", she was not forcing through reform just to save money. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16789158 Radio program on this now http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01b9hjq

Three serving Merseyside Police officers have been charged in connection with a fight which happened before a Liverpool v Everton match. A man suffered a broken jaw in the incident on 16 January. Det Sgt Greg Symon, 39, Det Con Mark Scarrat, 43, and Det Con Christopher Sheron, 43, are charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. Another five men have also been charged in connection with the incident. All eight have been bailed. They are due to appear at Blackburn Magistrates' Court on 21 February. The charges relate to an altercation between a number of football supporters which happened as they were on their way to Liverpool FC's Anfield ground, Merseys…

I know this is a (fairly) old US newspiece, and I'm not sure if any of you heard it, but I'm wondering what you all (particularly coppers, but whoever else) think of the conduct of the police in this video, Bear in mind, it's a public place, the police do warn them.. but do not cite the law they are actually breaking and all arrested were let out without charge. I think, although it's in typical fashion there, the arrest methods are a bit extreme, for example, one of the coppers punches that man in the cap and one of them puts his hand on Adam's throat as if to choke him? Thanks.

Here's a video showing police in California shooting a guy armed with an iron bar yesterday (23rd feb). http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=6d8_1327377667 As the police spokesman, only a few hours later, said, 'Not exactly optimal, but at this point, they did what they had to do.' Interesting for a few reasons: 1. The thick jacket the suspect was wearing may well have rendered Taser ineffective. 2. Using OC/Captor/CS would probably have proved just as useless. 3. The guys who filmed it thought it was absolutely hilarious. Compare and contrast with this London wheelie bin nonsense: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ee7_1305727114

Theresa May said she has accepted the recommendations of an independent panel that will end a series of payments for the police and freeze pay for most for two years. It is part of the wider reform of pay and conditions but it means one controversial payment that was facing the axe will be saved. The competence-related threshold payment is aimed at constables at the top of their pay scale who can only earn more money by being promoted. Overtime payments of time and third if officer work over a shift will also remain. Mrs May insisted there will be no reduction in basic pay and any extra payments would be focused on specialist staff and front line officers. The review…

Source: BBC News Now I'd always been told that although CS used a flammable carrier that there'd never been a case of it actually combusting, interesting that there's at least 2 cases.

A chance for us to do some community theatre? Apparently not. Police will be forced to deal with anti-social behaviour if five households in one area complain about another resident, the government says. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16783270 I remember the last lot of antisocial behaviour we had, i just said 'i cant be bothered to deal with this nonsense' then i went to get a kebab. Then i remembered that i didnt do that, in fact i went along with the rest of my section to try and do something. But faced with a large group of antisocial youths who dont care about what police or anyone else want and who's behaviour was antisocial but not sufficient for offences to hav…

The ban on smacking children must be overturned to help prevent a repeat of last summer’s riots, according to a senior Labour MP. Former Education Minister David Lammy, who represents the Tottenham area of North London where the disturbances started, says working-class parents need to be able to discipline their children physically to deter them from joining gangs and getting involved in knife crime. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2093223/Labour-MP-David-Lammy-Smacking-ban-led-riots.html#ixzz1kwrcY8PW C ertainly not installing discipline must be a factor in all this, not certain smacking is the way to go. Does this MP have a point?

SHOULD the police pay for security guards to patrol a taxi rank at night? That was a question that came up as funding for Bournemouth’s taxi marshals runs out. http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/9500922.Funding_debate_over_marshals_at_Bournemouth_taxi_rank/r/?ref=twt "“To me, it’s a police issue, the police should be paying for it.”" If Police could afford it would they not be doing the job themselves. I believe this was the Police force area where PC Nick Manning said that they could only afford three Officers on duty overnight. So two to marshal a taxi rank, other Officer to visit all the folks in Dorset that are being effected by Yobs.
