POLICE Sergeant John Skilling was found dead after being arrested for child porn offences. The 50-year-old, who had run Gloucestershire Police's schools unit which often dealt with internet safety, was discovered in his car in an exhaust-fume filled garage. Sergeant John Skilling He was well known across the county for giving talks at schools, particularly on cyber-bullying. Police have confirmed he was arrested at his home last September "on suspicion of making, possessing and distributing indecent images of children." Just over two months later he was found dead. An inquest was opened into his death on November 23, when he was formally identified by Detective In…

Thousands of police take up second jobs Officers are being permitted to moonlight in roles such as private investigators and security trainers to boost their income. Figures obtained by The Times through a Freedom of Information request indicate that the number of officers taking on extra work has tripled in some forces since 2009. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9078612/Thousands-of-police-take-up-second-jobs.html Not see anything wrong with this idea, but I am sure someone will.

http://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/community/community-news/cambridgeshire_police_budget_cuts_have_not_affected_frontline_1_3521737 While this is a locally-based article for Cambridgeshire, I thought it raised a number of national issues which are worth considering. HMIC's suggestion that 9 out of 10 cut jobs were frontline, is a scary one and flies in the face of the government's claim that frontline services would be protected.

Interesting article on the Beeb. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-16905102 So, what do we think about the current, or historic, crop of police dramas? I'll kick off, so to speak; In my view Hill Street Blues came as close as any programme to capturing the 'feel' of what it is like to come to work each day. I know it's American and the scenarios are somewhat different but the character interactions and the underpinning feel of battling each day against a chaos that never subsides had me hooked. Over to you.........

On becoming Home Secretary, Theresa May told senior officers she wanted to be crystal clear that the mission of the service was "to cut crime, no more and no less". So what about the lost child, the confused old gentleman who has forgotten how to get home, the burst water main that has flooded the High Street, the death notice to be delivered to relatives of a teenager killed in a road accident, the road safety advice for primary school children, the neighbours who need to be told to turn the music down: are we really saying that the police should stop doing these duties unless they are demonstrated to "cut crime"? In episode one of Mark Easton's new BBC Radio 4 series…

http://www.thisishullandeastriding.co.uk/VIDEO-Chainsaw-wielding-Dean-Dinnen-storms-Hull-s/story-15198431-detail/story.html VIDEO footage shows the terrifying moment a man burst into a north Hull pub and attacked drinkers with a chainsaw. Dean Dinnen, 24, stormed into The Endyke pub, in Endike Lane, with the petrol-powered saw, after he was earlier asked to leave because he would not put out his cigarette. Lots of strange people about. I suspect the good excuse is, the cigarette, can make people feel tetchy :) More on this story http://www.thisishullandeastriding.co.uk/Man-charged-pub-chainsaw-attack/story-13141095-detail/story.html

Pc George Alleway was called to Kingston, south London, at 0245 GMT on 12 February after residents reported a man in his 30s in a distressed state.
