The police have been given the green light to use unmanned military-style drones. But civil liberties groups have called for tighter regulation amid fears the skies could become ‘littered with flying cameras’. Police minister Damian Green said the aircraft, which carry CCTV cameras, could be used in ‘appropriate’ circumstances. Senior police officers want to extend the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, which are seen as a cheaper alternative to manned helicopters. The incident dates back from March 2011. A British Transport Police officer has admitted carelessly driving a police van which collided with a cyclist in east London. Pc David Lynch, 31, denied dangerous driving but pleaded guilty to careless driving. The officer will stand trial accused of dangerously driving the Mercedes Vito van which hit singer and songwriter Pepe Belmonte on March 31. At London's Southwark Crown Court, Lynch was told that he is accused of driving "a mechanically propelled vehicle, namely a Mercedes Vito van, on Queensbridge Road, dangerously". The incident in Hackney prompted an Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation into the cas…

Exeter-based PCSO Sarah Giles, tweeting as @TopshamPolice, posted messages about student "mayhem" in the area. PCSO Giles has more than 1,000 online followers for her updates about everyday life on the beat. In reference to students, recent tweets included the comments: "Disgruntled residents in St James PCSO Harvey keeping them informed ref work being done o…
