I've just heard an announcement on BBC Breakfast that it is the funeral today of the prison officer who was murdered recently. According to the report, Malcolm Mc Guiness said he wanted to attend the funeral but the officer's family told him that he would not be welcome. It's good to see them showing their true feelings.

With 440 arrests in four years, he could never be accused of softly-softly policing. Not least because, as his admiring colleagues put it, he just loves ‘sinking his teeth into criminals’. But all good things come to an end and now Janus, a Belgian Malinois police dog, is retiring at the grand old age of nine and a half. Happy retirement! Janus the police dog, who has chalked up a remarkable 440 arrests in the last four years, is calling it a day at the age of nine-and-a-half. Janus is seen here with handler PC Dan Thomas Paired with handler PC Dan Thomas in 2008, Janus has used his tracking and searching skills to secure the arrest of 285 crime suspects. He also assi…

An investigation is under way after a police officer believed to be guarding the home of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge accidentally fired a gun. Scotland Yard has launched an inquiry into the incident on Anglesey on 24 October. Nobody was injured when the officer, who was sitting in an unmarked car with another policeman, let off the shot. The Metropolitan Police (MPS) said the officer concerned had been removed from firearms duty pending an inquiry. The duke, or Flight Lieutenant Wales as he is known in his capacity as an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot, captains Sea King helicopters from his unit's base at RAF Valley, Anglesey. Police would not confirm p…

Apologies for DailyFail but good story: Teenage super sleuth, 16, tracks burglar down in ONE HOUR on Facebook after raid on home and gets him jailed for two years Connor Kendall, 16, was told by police that there was little hope of ever finding the burglar who got away with a £1,000 haul - including a digital camera, camcorder, a laptop, and wristwatch - from his family home in Cornwall. But he decided to take matters into his own hands and incredibly the amateur sleuth had things wrapped up in no time when he managed to track down the culprits himself. Connor and three friends went into Bodmin near where he lives and began talking to local youngst…

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/9656848/Arthur-Hambleton.html Another good man has gone, he was a gentleman CC during the time when many were not. I met him a few times since he retired when he attended 'retired ACPO Dinners', he was alway friendly and approachable. Whatever the Met say, they were very obstructive during his enquiry, and because of the political situation at the time there was a 'sweep it under the carpet' attitude from the government, and the Met.

"New figures show that cautions showed up on 153,000 Criminal Records Bureau checks carried out last year, allowing employers to stop candidates working with children or in health and social care" Read more: http://www.dailymail...l#ixzz2BFViLpV7 The continual pressure to achieve detections has no doubt affected the employability of some decent people who have made a silly mistake and agreed to receive a caution. Officer discretion, restorative justice etc are all well and good but if such interventions don't carry the same weight as a caution or charge then Chief Constables will only pay lip service to them. I know not everyone will agree but I hope that this story i…

I have a choice of: Ann Barnes: Independant Dai Liyanage; Independant Craig Mackinlay: Conservative Steve Uncles; English Democrats Piers Wauchope: UK Independence Party Harrient Yeo: Labour Should I exclude politics therefore exclude the last 4, or is one of the political candidates a very good oke? So, go ahead, name the chap/chapess you reckon will be the most effective.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/9651804/Armed-Forces-on-stand-by-to-man-prisons-in-case-of-strike.html If they do go on strike it will be very interesting to see what HMG can do about it. They will not be able to sack them all because it would take ten years to train new recruits, and who would arrest them all.
