Government claims of more accountability in policing with the dawn of PCCs is not a foregone conclusion, says Royston Martis. No one wants them. And yet today (November 15) the country - well a very small percentage of people in England and Wales - will go to the polls to vote for police and crime commissioners. In case you've missed it - and many have – this is the much maligned Conservative 2010 election promise to make policing more "accountable" to the public. Oh yes, and it will totally and utterly politicise policing. The introduction of police and crime commissioners has been an omnishambles, or in other words a total mismanagement. But despite reams of opposit…

A difficult incident experienced by a police officer this week shows why the job is not as straightforward as some think, says Royston Martis. Why bother? Why bother when you are not appreciated? Do Prime Minister David Cameron and Home Secretary Theresa May know what police officers do on a daily basis? As they relax in their state subsidised homes, or dine on exquisite country suppers, do they ever think about what British bobbies – the finest police officers in the world as they say – are having to face on the streets? Yes, those very same police officers whose pay, conditions and pensions are being attacked on what now seems to be an almost weekly basis. I ask bec…

A short time ago I was stopped at airport security on my way to get my flight back down south. Apparently, my baggage was selected for search on a random basis as i fit a profile - I was intrigued what profile a white anglo-saxon, mid 60s mle my fit ans the security officer didn't seem able to tell me. Mind you, I would have had difficulty undertsanding her because of her quite marked eastern / central european accent. Just before my bag was searchd, she had swabbed another bag and she was going to swab my bag with this same swab. I asked her to use a new swab and she refused. I said that unless she used a new swab I was refusing her permission to swab the bag. She then …

I am sad to hear that Sir Rex Hunt, the Governor of The Falkland Islands at the time of the invasion by Argentina, has passed away. He was a True-Brit' - not just for his stand at Port Stanley but, apparently, he also flew Spitfires and was a diplomat in a number of hot-spots - including Vietnam at the time of the fall of Saigon. The Falklands posting was intended as a quiet spot before he retired! May he Rest In Peace.

Cash-strapped Greater Manchester Police is recruiting apprentices to help its neighbourhood teams. The force wants to hire 22 young apprentices and will pay them £10,500 a year – less than the minimum wage which is about £12,000 a year. The recruitment comes after a £134m cost-cutting drive which will see 2,700 posts axed. One police officer told the M.E.N.: “It’s policing on the cheap.” Force bosses want to recruit from ‘hard-to-reach’ communities where people have tended not to consider a career in the police. They are looking for people with ‘potential’ rather than experience. Those recruited would mostly be doing paperwork rather than going out on the beat. Und…

http://mancunianmatt...auses-youtube-o If you watch the video use headphones The disgusting moment an abusive man launched into a homophobic tirade against a couple on their way to Manchester is causing outrage on YouTube. The recording of the middle-aged man hurling sickening abuse at the friends captures almost three minutes of footage – but the insulting began when the passengers were about to board the train at Blackpool North Station. After taking separate carriages of the TransPennine Express train, the man continued his aggressive outburst when the pair moved to find the toilet. He shouted: “How can your dad f***ing be proud of c***s like you? How can anyone b…

http://www.bbc.co.uk...ashire-20086519 "A police officer has been disciplined after her force received complaints about TV footage which showed her putting on lip gloss while on duty. PC Claire van Deurs Goss was shown applying gloss while at the wheel of a police car in Monday's episode of Channel 4's 999: What's Your Emergency. A Lancashire Police spokeswoman said the force had taken "management action" after receiving over 50 complaints. She added that the PC's conduct had been "below expectations". During the programme, Mrs van Deurs Goss was shown applying lip gloss and said "lipstick is more effective than a Taser" when dealing with some dangerous situations. …
