http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/4773..._say_ministers/ POLICE chiefs have been urged to send out special constables instead of fully trained officers on Friday and Saturday nights to save cash. Government proposals to make £545m annual savings by 2014 will target a rise in overtime payments that will swallow up six per cent of the pay bill in some forces. They call for more specials and community support officers to be deployed at weekends in place of warranted officers, to “get the most from taxpayers’ moneyâ€. Ministers insisted the switch was already under way in London, but the Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, warned of “car…

'Super lorry' stopped by police A 25.25m (83ft) long so-called superlorry has been blocked from being driven on public roads by police in Lincolnshire. The new longer vehicle was being driven from the headquarters of owners Denby Transport, in Lincoln, when it was stopped earlier. Police said the vehicle was unlawful due to its length. Denby Transport said its lawyers believe the lorry complies with all the current regulations. A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police said: "There are a set of 'construction and use' regulations within British law which cover the use of motor vehicles on UK roads. We're trying to clarify and test the law - we're not trying to flout it.…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/notting...ire/8391372.stm A convicted murderer's libel case against a national newspaper has been thrown out by a High Court judge. A judge with sense. "Victoria Jolliffe, pointed out libel can only be claimed if the words result in the general public having a lower opinion of the claimant." Can we see the law for the future here?
