A VOLUNTEER crimefighter is retiring after giving around 12,000 hours of his own time to help make the streets of Bolton safer over the past 25 years. Chief Inspector Peter Ryder, who used to lead Bolton’s special constabulary, finally hung up his handcuffs at a ceremony at Bolton Central Police Station yesterday. Chief Superintendent Steve Hartley paid tribute to his dedication which saw him work roughly 10 hours a week, unpaid, over his 25 years service. A Somali jailed for sheltering a policewoman's killer won the right to stay in Britain yesterday. Outrage erupted after Hewan Gordon, 38, won an appeal against a Government bid to deport him. Gordon had served 18 months' jail for giving refuge to evil Muzzaker Shah, one of the gang which shot dead PC Sharon Beshenivsky in Bradford in 2005.
