For your available options click the below button. IT is quite understandable that people question the value of special police constables. They are, after all, civilian volunteers who lack the same powers of arrest granted to their full-time colleagues. Detractors might argue specials are simply part of a numbers game. div#related-article-links p a, div#related-article-links p a:visited {color:#06c;} An apparently experienced police officer was casting an avuncular eye over the centre of Mansfield yesterday. The trouble was that he was made out of cardboard. If there is a universal complaint among the residents of this former brewery town it is that they rarely see officers on patrol. “You never see them in the daytime,†complained one shopper at the Market Place. If you look at how this will impact on his business in terms of having to lay people off etc I think this is a bit overboard! Let us not forget these thugs had broken into his house and threatened his family, who could blame him for going all death wish? fyi, i'm not condoning his actions, merely pointing out that his actions are surely mitigated by the preceeding events.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson said such people "make our society worthwhile". Police should encourage people to intervene, not just allow them to do so, the commissioner added.
