Two terror suspects won a High Court ruling today that paves the way for the first compensation claims against the Home Secretary relating to control orders. The two men, known as AF and AE, say the orders made against them were unlawful and they were entitled to damages from human rights violations. A judge formally quashed all the orders today and opened the way for the men to claim damages for a period dating back to 2006, when the first orders restricting their movements were imposed. But Mr Justice Silber, sitting at London's High Court, cautioned that today's ruling did not automatically mean they would succeed on all their liability claims against the Home Secre…

They call him Laptop. But as Britain's smallest PC, Robin Port has heard all the jokes before. At just 5ft tall in his police boots, he has learned that it helps to have a towering sense of humour. The 29-year-old constable has made an impressive 17 arrests in his first month on the beat for the Devon and Cornwall force. Small but effective: Britain's shortest ever police officer Pc Robin Port with his supervisor Inspector Matt Lawler (who is 6ft) Which is evidence enough that this former soldier has what it takes to fight crime. 'I am very confident I can hold my own,' he said. 'I have martial arts training so I don't see myself as more at risk than any othe…

Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics...e-officers.html Under the pilot project, Sikh police officers act as go-betweens, offering support to victims and advising investigating officers on cultural issues deemed important to solving crimes. The Metropolitan Police, which is running the scheme, said they would encourage staff associations representing other minority groups, such as Muslims, Hindus and Jews, to follow suit if detection rates were seen to benefit Black people and homosexuals may also be entitled to ask for an officer of the same ethnicity or sexuality. But rank and file police officers have reacted angrily to the new policy, calling it "po…

A Royal Mail manager who stole cash from children's birthday cards to fund a lavish lifestyle was jailed for six months yesterday. David Baker, 47, stole notes and even coins from envelopes which were destined for youngsters - then threw the cards in the bin. He is believed to have stolen thousands during his 23-year career. The sorting office manager targeted colourful envelopes he knew would contain money being sent as gifts to children and ripped them open to take cash and gift tokens. Baker was eventually caught after officials became suspicious and sent an undercover investigator to his sorting office to watch him work. The night he was arrested he was caught wi…

To the casual observer, there was little to distinguish the Java Bean internet cafe in Wembley from the hundreds of others dotted around the capital. But to surveillance officers staking it out month after month, this unremarkable venue was the key to busting a remarkable and sophisticated network of cyber criminals. From the bank of computers inside, a former pizza bar worker ran an international cyber "supermarket" selling stolen credit card and account details costing the banking industry tens of millions. Renukanth Subramaniam, 33, was revealed today as the founder and a major "orchestrator" of the secret DarkMarket website, where elite fraudsters bought and sold p…
