That was the view given to El Reg today by Matthew Ryder, a barrister specialising in police powers and human rights. Following the recent ruling by the Strasbourg Court of Human Rights that s44 of the Terrorism Act 2000 (http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2000/uk…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/8464885.stm I particularly like how they will improve things by "increasing their detection rate". Is that an improvement or is that just playing the statistics game? As for more police on the street, does anyone know how this will be achieved? I guess without recruitment (obviously, as it's a 90 day plan) then it will be moving officers away from specialist teams to front-line duties? Surely this will hit their 'superb record with large scale crimes' and is like robbing Peter to pay Paul?

I received this artical via a tweet and found it really interesting.  How can a child be beaten to death, yet no one is jailed for murder? - The Guardian http://bit.ly/68zf43 it's a reminder to me why I want to be paediatric nurse and a special with MSC. I can't assume I will be involved in cases such as this but I can't read something like this and turn off the computer, turn the page or change the channel. If I only play a small part in preserving and protecting life, young or old, I will go from this life happy. There are details of physical child abuse within the artical.

I think this would be the correct section. But i was just reading the paper and a saw this story, "A CACHE of weapons including crossbows and HARPOONS was allegedly found at the home of a support cop yesterday. Police also took away bags said to contain a range of imitation firearms and a sword. They swooped after Daniel Williams, 21, posted a snap of himself on Facebook clutching two handguns in an assassin stance copied from video game Hitman. He even dressed as the suit-wearing gunman Agent 47 and also posed with what seemed to be a sniper rifle. The community support officer's page suggested wife Katie - who he married last year - had left him. And it carried…

A chief constable wants shoplifters to be punished in special shopping centre courts. Petty criminals would be hauled before magistrates who would hand out fines, community punishments or even jail. The courts would be based inside major shopping outlets, such as Manchester's Arndale Centre. Greater Manchester Chief Constable Peter Fahy said 'radical thinking' was needed to speed up the way police and courts dealt with prisoners. As well as a courtroom, a mini-police station with cells could also be set up among the shops. It follows a crackdown on the use of £80 on-the-spot fines for shoplifters by the Government. They can now only be used in limited circumstance…
