The Metropolitan Police should ensure its officers are properly trained in public order policing, a report says. This is among several recommendations made by the Metropolitan Police Authority in a report into policing at the G20 protests in London last year. It also says disciplinary action should be taken against officers who do not display their identification numbers. The report comes after the death of Ian Tomlinson, who was pushed over by a policeman during the demonstrations. The Report by the MPA Civil Liberties Panel, entitled Post G20, investigated the Met's current public order policing strategies and will be presented to the full Authority for final ratificat…

a judge has slammed a family's 'reprehensible' behaviour for taking an £18,000 pay-off from a teacher who sexually abused their four-year-old son instead of notifying police. Paedophile Gerard Raffell, 42, walked free from court despite admitting repeated abuse of the child between 2004 and 2005 until his parents discovered his crimes. Shockingly, instead of reporting him to the police, they demanded £18,000 for a deposit on their new home in return for silence. Raffell left his job as a maths teacher, moved house and his offences only came to light four years later when the youngster spoke to others about what had happened. He pleaded guilty to four counts of causi…

The way the police in England and Wales deal with complaints of anti-social behaviour has been strongly criticised by the chief inspector of constabulary. Nottinghamshire also recorded the highest rate of violent assaults. The inspectorate found the way police databases logged information about reports of harassment, vandalism and verbal abuse was "inadequate".…

The drug has proved successful at fighting tumours in laboratory conditions and, if successful in treating Kirste, could help thousands of women undergoing treatment for breast cancer in the UK.
