A Home Office campaign stating that police can now be expected to spend 80% of their time on the beat has been banned by the advertising watchdog. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said the advert did not make clear time spent "on the beat" included duties other than foot patrols. It said the television advert must not be broadcast again in its current form. The Home Office said it was "extremely disappointed". It said the advert told people what to expect from police. The ASA said the advertisement broke its rules on being "legal, decent, honest, truthful". It said that as well as having a misleading definition of "on the beat", the advert failed to make …

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/...ice-killer.html A MAJOR police investigation was under way in a quiet village today as tributes poured in for a 40-year-old post office owner who was found dead in her store. Odd one, robbed at more or less same time of the year twice, and this time far more violent. The last time i watched an unfolding case similar to this, it was a local who had perpetrated the crime. Ian Huntly. I think this story will run and run.

I will defend my occupation (and frequently do) to the ends of the earth, but sometimes I wonder if we could get on a bit better by engaging our brains and not shooting ourselves in the foot quite so often. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12...-car-death.html It may well have been a well handled enquiry with compassionate press releases etc etc but should someone have not applied a wee bit of common sense and said "On this occasion, well done to all, but we won't be submitting it as a competition entry, it might needlessly get peoples' back up"? Seems like a case of personal ambitions and a need for praise getting in the way of common sense, tact and diplomacy.

Northumbria Police nominated themselves for an award, given by The Chartered Institute of Public Relations, and achieved Gold Award status in "Crisis Communications". Unfortunately the award by the public relations body was not met with universal approval, and details of Northumbria's success have been removed from the CIPR web site. The award related to press releases regarding the unfortunate death of 16 year old Haley Adamson, who was knocked down by a Northumbria PC driving at 94 mph with no siren or blue lights. An entry on the CIPR website now simply says: In their submission to the awards judges, Northumbria Police said they aimed to ‘minimise the risks t…

A wanted burglary suspect has mocked police with a picture of himself next to a police van - to replace the mugshot "he didn't like". Maynard poses beside a police van in the picture he sent to a paper A snapshot of Matthew Maynard first appeared in a newspaper at the weekend, among a group of others police want to track down. After seeing the snap, he called the South Wales Evening Post, "saying he was not happy with the picture and that he would send in another", said a spokesman for the paper. Maynard then used his mobile phone to provide a new image - cheekily showing him standing in front of a police van - which the paper subsequently published. Police mugsh…
