Police have been criticised for 'burgling' homes — in a bizarre bid to prevent crime. The officers walked into homes through unlocked doors and open windows and left behind swag bags packed with valuable items they found. The controversial operation was designed to show how easy it is for burglars to break into properties. But some residents were unaware their property had been "burgled" — even though they were at home at the time. PC Rob Bolt, a neighbourhood beat manager in the St James area of Exeter, Devon, said "Officers were able to walk into people's homes and place the swag bags in the properties while we could hear them upstairs." Police "broke into" mor…

Funding for Community Support Officers should not continue to be ring fenced amid the fragile economic situation, according to ACPO The group is concerned that “the recession and uncertainty over future public spending†means managers need to have more of a say over how they can use their funds – and should not be committed to any one course of action. While ACC Jerry Kirkby, ACPO Lead on PCSOs, accepted that investment in the officers had enabled neighbourhood policing to become established, he was concerned at the tough economic conditions. “Perhaps this is the right time for the Service to be given greater flexibility,†he told PoliceOracle.com. Kirkby’s s…

A pensioner tried to abduct two young girls in separate incidents at a Sainsbury's supermarket, a court heard. Iain Quarrier, 68, waved a £20 note and told a nine-year-old girl: 'I want to buy you.' A fortnight later at the same store in Canal Way, Ladbroke Grove, he drunkenly tried to lead a screaming five-year-old away from her mother at the checkout. Blackfriars Crown Court heard he also received a police caution in 1996 for indecently assaulting two girls. Judge Aidan Marron QC handed Quarrier 12 months in jail suspended for two years after he admitted the Sainsbury's attack on the five-year-old. The earlier allegation relating to the nine-year-old was never pu…

convicted rapist facing deportation has won a High Court battle to be allowed to stay in Britain so he can get married. Alphonse Semo, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, threw his victim on a rubbish tip when he 'had finished with her'. But last night he won the right to remain in the UK for his wedding, just hours before he was due to board a plane back to Africa. A judge said it was difficult to have any sympathy for Semo, who was jailed for eight years, but he must be allowed to stay. Mr Justice Collins said the Home Office had at first agreed to let the 53-year-old, from Deptford, south east London, get married to his long-term partner, a German nati…
