Complaints about the police in England and Wales take too long to investigate, says a cross-party group of MPs. The Home Affairs Select Committee said the Independent Police Complaints Commission was failing to win trust. They criticised the watchdog, saying retired officers could end up investigating their old force. The watchdog's chairman, Nick Hardwick, attacked the report, saying some of its findings, including the role of retired officers, were "demonstrably untrue". The select committee's report followed a BBC Radio 4 investigation which raised questions about the watchdog's effectiveness. The MPs said that the IPCC had handled cases in a "distant and non-empathe…

The leaders of a child-trafficking operation that put hundreds of beggars on the streets of Britain were targeted in a series of raids today in a remote Romanian town where opulent mansions have sprung up since the country joined the European Union. Roma children aged from 7 to 15 were bought or taken, possibly by force, from their parents in rural Romania and trained to beg and steal, making millions of pounds a year in Britain for their gangmasters at the height of the scam, police believe. The alleged child-trafficking ring based in Tandarei, in southern Romania, was said to be responsible for sending at least 168 children to London, from where they would also travel…

When a motorist decided to circumvent a traffic jam by driving in a bus lane he probably wasn't thinking about alien life forms. But after the manoeuvre was caught on camera and he received a £120 fine in the post he came up with an intergalactic excuse. The unnamed driver, apparently with a straight face, told officials in Southwark, south London, that he was 'forced' to use the bus lane to avoid an alien spaceship which was 'hurtling towards him'. Appeals: Southwark Council has released details of the outlandish excuses some drivers have given to avoid paying fines - including one man who claimed he drove in a bus lane to avoid hitting an oncoming spaceship He tol…

The first woman chief constable of Bedfordshire Police is to retire in December. Gillian Parker took up her post in July 2005. Her deputy, Martin Stuart, will also step down this year in September. The county's police authority said it would start recruiting for Mrs Parker's replacement as soon as possible. However it will appoint a temporary deputy chief constable from within the force until a new chief constable is in post to ensure a smooth transition. Mrs Parker was second-in-command at Suffolk Police for five years before she took up her current in position. She received the Queen's Police Medal in 2003. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/beds/bu...rts/860908…
