Sports stars trusted more than politicians Mon Apr 12 2010 12:40:44 Britons trust sports stars more than politicians, according to a new poll. As the General Election approaches, the likes of Gordon Brown and David Cameron were rated bottom of a list of 10 professions ranked on their trustworthiness. More than a third (35 per cent) of those surveyed chose politicians as their absolute least trusted, the highest proportion assigned to any of the jobs. Policemen topped the FindsYouCars.com league, followed by professional sportspeople and then social workers. Psychologist Dr Funke Baffour said: "It's not surprising to see that there is no one we trust less than politi…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/8614723.stm The Real IRA has admitted it was behind a car bomb which exploded outside MI5's Northern Ireland headquarters. The blast seems to have been timed to coincide with the precise moment that policing and justice powers devolved from Westminster to Stormont. It happened at about 0020 BST outside Palace Barracks, in Holywood, County Down. Police said no warning was given. The bomb went off as the surrounding area was being evacuated. An elderly man was treated for minor injuries. The bomb was placed in a taxi, which had been hijacked in the Ligoniel area of north Belfast, about seven miles from Holywood, at about 2150 B…

A disgraced banker who stole £315,000 from his disabled niece's charity fund has been ordered to pay back just £1. Well-wishers donated hundreds of thousands of pounds into a trust for Ellie May Challis, 5, who had all her limbs amputated during a battle with meningitis in 2005. Her uncle, banker Darren Pease, 33, was made a trustee of the account because of his financial knowledge but was jailed in November last year after admitted siphoning off £315,000 to splash out on jewellery, holidays and computer gadgets. Pease was taken back to court yesterday after police went through his finances to check if he could repay any of Ellie May's money. But it was revealed d…

A ban on synthetic stimulant mephedrone has come into force across the UK. Legislation placing the drug and other related compounds in the Class B category alongside cannabis was rushed through Parliament. The government's drugs advisers - the Advisory Council for the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) - found evidence the substances were "likely to be harmful". Possession carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment, while dealers could receive up to 14 years. The Association of Chief Police Officers says it has "no intention" of "criminalising" young people caught with mephedrone, also known as "plant food" or "meow". Police say they will focus on suppliers and ahead …

Daily fail Somebody is stopped and searched by the police every 20 seconds in 'Big Brother' Britain, it was revealed last night. More than nine out of every ten of those interrogated by officers are not even subsequently arrested, let alone charged. Yes, i agree, once every twenty seconds is not often enough. Obviously more is needed, so we can only hope our next government will put more money into Policing.

Deeside cop lied to cover up driving a car without MoT
Published date: 16 April 2010 | Published by: Staff reporter A DEESIDE policeman's career is in tatters after he tried to escape punishment for driving without a MoT certificate. When stopped he lied at the roadside and said it had been "done last week". Dean Hardy, a police officer for eight years, was told to produce the documents and at the police station he filled a form in to say everything was in order when it was not. He did not produce his documents to anyone. Hardy simply filled in the form himself and asked a junior officer to sign it without seeing his MOT certificate. T…

Last month the force - which has not commented - held a jobs drive in which 200,000 people called about 60 posts. The commission said the allegations were "extremely concerning". The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said the police officer recruitment exercise, which ran from 8 to 12 February, "encountered technical difficulties on the first two nights with conse…

Police officers who used a Taser gun on a man suffering an epileptic fit are to be investigated by watchdogs. The 40-year-old man, who spent two weeks in hospital after the incident, claims the officers were negligent and had used excessive force. Police were called to help paramedics who claimed the man was biting and punching them after he collapsed outside the Powerleague gym in Whalley Range, Greater Manchester, last November. One officer fired a Taser, an electroshock weapon, at the man. He was also restrained and taken to hospital. The Independent Police Commission is investigating. IPCC Commissioner Naseem Malik said: "This man suffered an epileptic seizure and…
