New figures have revealed there is now almost one serious knife attack per week in Hammersmith and Fulham. Reporter ADAM COURTNEY speaks to both a victim who is now forever looking over his shoulder, and a neighbourhood policeman, who insists he needn't. The shocking murder of Henry Compton schoolboy Sofyen Belamouadden, knifed to death by a pack of teenagers at Victoria Station last month, has propelled the emotive issue of teenagers and blades back up the news agenda. This newspaper has also reported several more knife incidents in Fulham, most recently the case of the man stabbed in the neck after a minor altercation in a North End Road pub, and at least three knifin…

In the first year since police were given new powers to take immediate action against foreign drivers who commit traffic offences, there have been fewer collisions and casualties on Kent roads. Between April and October 2008 there were 43 collisions and 68 casualties on Kent roads involving foreign goods vehicles. Between the same period in 2009, this reduced to 34 collisions and 47 casualties. Until the new legislation, officers could not issue fixed penalty notices (FPNs) to offending foreign drivers because there was no guarantee that the fine would be paid within 28 days. Officers also could not check whether drivers had already committed previous offences that woul…

Police officers must be armed with even more powerful weapons to deal with a Mumbai-style terrorist attack in the UK, a top officer said last night. Scotland Yard Assistant Commissioner John Yates said officers needed a huge boost to their firepower to combat an atrocity where the aim is to kill as many innocents as possible in a matter of minutes. His comments reflect grave concerns that Britain may not be able to cope with a copy-cat attack and suggest moves toward the greater use of 'heavy ballistic weapons' including rapid-fire assault rifles and C9 Minimi machine guns, as used by the SAS, as well as more powerful bullets. Deadly: One of the Mumbai gunmen. Ther…

The issuing of military assault rifles to some Police specialists will provide them with a potent asset if they have to deal with a multi-site terrorist atrocity. According to Richard Jones, Resource Manager at the Leeds-based National Firearms Centre, the purchase of the Heckler and Koch G36 – which fires the standard NATO 5.56 round – will give Metropolitan CO19 officers the punch to fight at longer ranges in a Mumbai-style attack. As reported on PoliceOracle.com on April 16, AC John Yates – who chairs the ACPO Terrorism and Allied Matters Committee – said that heavier ballistic weaponry and ammunition should be available to those on the front lines of serio…

A Chatham man who was assaulted by two policemen in his home has received a letter of apology from Kent Police and an out of court settlement. Anthony Colcomb, 57, was threatened with a knife by one of the officers who went to his flat to arrest him over an alleged robbery. He was never charged. Both officers were subsequently convicted of assault and then sacked following the incident in August 2008. Mr Colcomb said he had put the ordeal behind him. Kent Police Assistant Chief Constable Allyn Thomas said a letter was sent to Mr Colcomb's solicitors on 24 March as a final apology on behalf of the force.
